So I wouldn't fit-in to the South. A church on every block throughout much of the South is a dead give-away of what that region is all about.

And then I don't like Southern cops, speed limits, gun-toting, hillbillies, hicks, guitars, country music, drug war, prisons, chain-gangs, death rows, executions, hot springs, hot summers, hot falls, hot nights, hot-tempers, hot-heads, rattlesnakes, Southern attitudes, backlash, hatred of liberals, hatred of immigrants, hatred of foreign lands, hatred of new-comers, hatred of migrants, suspicion of Jews, suspicion of non-Christians, suspicion of Muslims, suspicion of atheists, suspicion of minorities, fear of change, on and on...... So, I stay-out of the South. Why deal with that region?

But things are changing in the South. The drug gangs from California are expanding their territory and moving into the South. Los Surenos (the X3 gang) now runs the drug-trade in Atlanta and other cities in Georgia. And Alabama: you are next for the X3 gang...... Wait until you get a taste of the gangsters! God help you all.

Only because Adults tell them they are real.

Just like kids aren't aware of National, Racial or Ethnic differences until Adults teach them.

Yes and as that child develops and starts to think for themselves, developing a sense of rational thinking and reason, they start to see reality. I am not a child psychologists nor do I have the knowledge of one but, the cognitive developmental process is pretty well documented. Not to mention the obvious difference between the thinking/thought process/creation of an 8yr. old child vs. a grown adult. Just think about the differences in thought processes of a high school drop out vs a doctor/phd. It would be foolish to extrapolate a world view from that of a child, unless you are yourself a child.

PS. eventually that child too will grow up and tell their children santa claus exists.

I have lived in NY, NJ, CT, MI (Detroit), Portland and now for eleven years in North Carolina. As a foreigner (asian) trying to integrate into the US, I have to say I found NY and Portland the easiest and most welcoming places regardless of what's on the heat map. Just my personal experience. The south (at least the RTP area) is not as bad as its made out to be but this whole hang up with too much religion is somewhat irksome at times. Thankfully most of my southern friends (black, white and other colors) are quite as irreverent as I am so I am doing just fine here.

I might remind everyone in the South that President George Washington strongly opposed any religion or reference to God on any U.S. coins. No God crap was put onto U.S. coins until the 2cent piece was introduced in 1864. The argument for a reference to God i.e, "In God We Trust" was to mourn the loss of the 600,000 who died in the Civil War. So the reference to God was snuck onto a U.S. coin to commemorate the Civil War dead.

In 1908, the religious-right in America then moved to put the God crap onto gold coins. President Theodore Roosevelt objected, and for a few months, the God crap was kept off. Then, once the religious-right got "In God We Trust" onto
gold coins, their next move was to commemorate the death of President Lincoln with the new Lincoln penny design in 1909. That new design put "In God We Trust" on the penny. Then, after they snuck that onto the penny, the religious-right moved to place "In God We Trust" onto all remaining U.S. coins and currency. Then, after that "In God We Trust" became "the official" motto of the United States.

George Washington, who strongly opposed such a reference to God on coins is now turning-over in his grave.

And now the religious-right has "One Nation Under God" in the flag-salute in every public school. They are very clever people, also very nice people. But they have an agenda, and they have taken-over the Republican Party in the United States. Their base of support is in the South. They want God and country mixed together; i.e, they oppose a secular America.

By Constitutional Law, there is no religious test to hold public office in America, but it is difficult to get elected in America, especially in the South, if you might be an atheist or non-Christian. That is how the system works in the U.S.

Actually, that was almost a half century ago. That means anyone who was an adult at the time is an old person now.

But his statement is generally true, the trend is for blacks to migrate back to the south. It's actually easier thank you think for many of them - most every black family I know has a lot of family in the south. That's the biggest hurdle to relocating (I know it is for me). They obviously aren't leaving due to racial tension, but they certainly don't think they're going to get lynched or anything.

By any reasonable measure, the civil rights era has been an unmitigated disaster for blacks. But, for the most part, Sowell focuses on government interference - i.e. public housing, vouchers, etc as being the reason. Dependence on government limited free movement, while it destroyed the black culture leading to a variety of social problems that drove everyone else away.

It's only been a couple years since Section 8 recipients now have the freedom to move anywhere in the country rather easily - that's a huge step. Instead of being stuck in a ghetto in Albany, they can move elsewhere. So, I think that will change.

I haven't read anything of his on the "New America" which has allowed in huge numbers of non-European people. In New York City at least, most groups obviously prefer to live amongst each other in ethnic ghettos. Anti-discrimination laws are never enforced for such "minorities", i.e. try renting an apartment in Chinatown if you're not Chinese. It's way harder than you think it is. So, that's also a major factor.

Actually, I don't think anyone who has done a modicum of research believes in the tabula rasa theory of human nature. There are in fact many studies that indicate that not only are children well aware of racial differences, they have a strong preference for facial features similar to that of their parents - i.e. people of their tribe.

The theory of human nature you espouse has been one of the most dangerous to ever be propagated, and has certainly led to far more human suffering.
