I see a possible up-side to genetically-modified crops: maybe crops that are genetically-modified to be drought tolerant, and maybe grow in saline soil. If that modification were achieved, maybe we could grow crops in saline basins in deserts? And that might make it possible to pump-in seawater and irrigate the crops; we wouldn't even have to filter the seawater to take-out the brine. The desert gravel could be used to filter the seawater....... Imagine what this one achievement could do for increasing the food supply on this planet!

Like more or less every other technology, genetic modifications can be used for good or bad purposes.

Presently, in our food supply from major corporations, I suspect genetic modifications are causing more harm than good. But I would think that ... given how much (how little) I trust the ethics of our major food corporations.
Most folks are good; a few aren't.
