This was not directed at you, but rather at the person in my quote! However, once technology like RFID is in place, how it is used becomes quite open to dark uses as well as good ones. The question is how will you prevent the dark uses?

Just imagine someone in your local traffic enforcement division checking your time stamp at x1,y1 coordinate, then the time stamp at x2,y2 coordinate.

      If (T2-T1)/delta x1,y1 & x2,y2 > 65 mph, you get a ticket in the mail.

The modern equivalent of radiologists scanning x-rays in the files for more consulting fees...
Oh you poor Americans! You're always so far behind the times these days.

I was in Germany the past few days. On the autobahn between Frankfurt and Baden Baden there's the usual automated spot speed checks that take a photo and send you a ticket in the mail [the legendary no-speed-limit autobahn is now restricted to 120 km/hr max, less in many places]. And now for something completely different...there are shiny new gantries over the autobahn and they contain equipment for each lane that can automatically detect and measure the distance between you and the car in front of you. Yep, if you tailgate you get a nice 8X10 glossy and a ticket. Smile.

Had dinner with a partner of mine from Geneva and was chatting with him about the above, and he said that the Swiss are already converting their spot speed check equipment to allow them to identify you and measure your average speed between measurement points [per C1ue above]and send you a ticket, even if you weren't over the limit at any of the actual spot measurement points.

      Fun, eh!

I thnk I'm going to buy me one of those cars Starving was describing...something with a Turbohydromatic tranny, VistaVision windshield, a ribbon speedo and a Rocket 88 engine, and see of those m-f'ers can track me in that. Transponder? What's a transponder?

Beam me up Scottie...I'm about ready to leave this place...

        No worries.

As to your question - it is simple: you must create from the ground up a business which can survive without need for money from the dark side.

A business which doesn't make any money will eventually not have a choice but to monetize however it can.

As part of this business plan, you must also keep in mind that there will be those who will want to take your technology and ideas and use it for the 'dark side'. In many areas this is unavoidable, but in most just being the first and best monetized out there is enough to ensure that the follow-on copycats won't get enough market share to offer meaningful data to the Sith...

The deliberations concerning offshore hosting of the data and database are examples of this.

I foresee a drastic decline in car washes. Dirty license plates and vaguely recognizable cars help the problem immensely.

Someone needs to invent an app that detects a texting driver, which then shuts down the phone indefinitely.
You sir are a living treasure, before your time and an endangered species all in one.
Yes America you are sooooooooo way behind the times, No GST/VAT, No shiny gantries that take speed licence plate and photo to record your wrongdoings, probably No User pays toll roads to suck you dry just going to work. I have a "fix" for you that you may find a little deceptive as far as the rego plate photo is concerned.
You all know about Polaroid. All outside cameras are fitted with them (filters) - cover your plate with a polaroid cover turned 180 degrees and see when they snap 'black' if they can trace you.
Hint brought to you by a motorcyclist that is just totally socially unacceptable at 57 years of age - never been caught in bed with another woman and never really cared for the ;taxing' times ahead.

careful this trick doesn't work in cities where cars are tagged electronically.

Simple enough to do a cheap solution. Every year, you peel and stick a renewal sticker on your car plate. The renewal sticker could have a RFID chip in it. That way every car and vehicle is covered! There will be some chip mortality -- but that would be a fixit ticket!

Until some joker with a large electromagnet walks around frying everyone's RFID chip in the parking lot.

Don't do that in Singapore, this is considered vandalism of public property (the RFID chip), and you'll be whipped.

Good luck catching someone doing it.

It can fit in a largish size briefcase, or a backpack

You going to arrest everyone in a parking lot with a briefcase or backpack?

I looked into that realm at the beginning as part of normal due diligence, but frankly there is no reason to do so as I already have a business model and monetization path involving only my customers (the public). The November launch date looks pretty good, I may be able to talk about it more then.

In fact, I am seriously contemplating offshore hosting specifically to be exempt from demands by the various local/state/city governments. The data available for collection as well as the database the service is operating off of are both proprietary and I don't want to have to worry about subpoenas or any other bureaucratic crap.

The social networking services, on the other hand, have no business model and no monetization path other than being acquired - thus are prime candidates for 'dark side' partnerships.

So YOU are Big Brother, huh?

Let's not give them any ideas. It's already difficult enough to tip toe one's way safely across the battlefields of the " war on terrah ".

Let's just say in one little area - I have more information, access, and a better plan than da gubmint.

Perhaps, but then again at some point the abuses on civil liberties are going to provoke a reaction of the opposite kind.

With security cams within sight almost everywhere, it is difficult to escape doing anything unnoticed. I wouldn't do anything illegal just to prove the point.

Vandalism is not about the act itself but rather it is seen as challenging the state and in a place like Singapore, anyone who challenges the state will have to pay the price.

Your ignorance is no doubt due to lack of understanding of the technical details.

A rig for frying RFID doesn't have to be that close to the RFID tag. After all, the entire purpose of the RFID tag is to respond to remote inquiries.

All you need is the activation code which wakes up/energizes the tag, then a nice beamed power spurt enough to fry the antenna and/or circuitry.

All the security cameras in the world won't catch you doing it.

Again, you'd have to stop and search every single person in the parking lot. Or in the road. Or on the sidewalk.

                              Good luck.
