On a serious note -- is it possible that, by adopting the Amero, the federal government could simply evaporate its foreign-held debt? A quick jiggling of the exchange between dollar and amero during the transition period would do it, especially if we're already having Armageddon from a meltdown in the credit/currency markets anyway.

Any comments? I've been reading iTuilip for months, but I'd say only have about 10% of a clue so far...

Theoretically it is possible to shave off some debt when exchanging one form of currency for another - see the example of the weaker members of the starting EU.

However, it generally only works if there is some solid base to draw on.

Given the cause of the debt and the weakening of the dollar overall, I don't see the rest of the world tolerating that obvious a fiat reduction of debt without in turn punishing the US by no longer extending new loans.

If the USA shares a currency with Canada and Mexico, I think states should start a full-scale succession. Half-joking, but some actions of sovereignty should not be given up.

I'm guessing you mean secession? As in the South with Rise Again?

Not a bad idea, but then think how much of a pain interstate travel would be

Then there's the specter of illegal aliens - droves of former Californians in Las Vegas, NV and Arizona fleeing to the next big real estate thing
