I guess at the risk of a pun, one could call the price a GOLDilocks price - it is Just Right.

Since no one else has acknowledged it, very nice pun.

btw headed to Lake Brevort this afternoon, looks like perfect UP weather.

Just to put the NFP report, and gold, in perspective...

I'm just saying that nothing really goes up in a straight line, like we did in the last 4-5 weeks... For gold to have a sustained up move above 1266, it needs to form a base from which it can shoot up, a low volatility base, where it goes down, quickly shoots back up, goes down, quickly shoots back up, etc, then breaks out of that range....

lower volatility relative to what? historical norms?
Remember that as far as single-commodity, small-market numbers go, Gold & Silver had 20+ years of very, very low dollar-denominated volatility after the 80s peak.

The volatility you're speaking of, is it just strictly in terms of dollars or compared against some other commodities or asset classes or something like the VIX or various derivatives?

Have a link for your volatility analysis?

He doesn't need to start a new one, he can count on me to kick his old one back up to the top on any really bad gold day.

As a true aficionado of Mega's posts, I prefer his "Gold Getting Killed !!!!" with four exclamation points over the one with the same thread title but only three exclamation points.

                Cheers, Mike!

                  We got that this morning.
When trading opened in New York gold jumped $11/oz in just 20 minutes.

well, I'm not the only one who has picked up on this...

reversion to the mean is NOT dead. Watch out!

I hear you, Grapejelly, and other smart people agree.
I'm out of my GLD positions right now, but I don't feel very smart about it yet.

Gold just popped $16/oz in an hour on the FOMC news.
Since July 27 one could have harvested $12/ share in GLD and it ain't over yet - that's 10% in eight weeks.
I managed to get just $2 / share of that and am sitting on the sidelines waiting for a dip to get back in.
I'll just keep repeating this to myself -"rule 1, don't lose money; rule 1, don't lose money..."

what is "the mean" in this case? The gold future hasn't touched the 50 week moving average since April 2009.

the mean in terms of VOLATILITY = LOTS of volatility ahead!!

We are going to encounter an explosion in volatility. The question is when. Probably not too long from now...

An ounce of gold has gone from buying a low end rack suit at Men's Wearhouse, to buying a little more upscale suit at Neiman or Saks. Someday, it will go back.

But a U.S. Dollar will never purchase 1/1000 of an ounce of gold again.
