  • what does recent LOW gold/silver volatility mean?

Very low volatility in the last few weeks. What does it mean?

Gold hasn't move up or down very much at all.

What do you read into this?

Sounds like manipulation to me. Probably by the world's central banks, aided by the Bilderbergers, the Illuminati, and the Bush family. I think we should report this to GATA.

sure, why not? You forgot the Rothschilds (great cigar size BTW) and my uncle Ernie.

I was thinking though that volatility is cyclical and it will at some point explode. Up or down, who can say. Nothing surprises me.

Is the gold market manipulated? Probably short term but I doubt it is possible long term to affect the gold price meaningfully.

How about ... it's high enough nobody sees a buying opportunity and ... it's low enough nobody seems compelled to sell.

I guess at the risk of a pun, one could call the price a GOLDilocks price - it is Just Right.

Low volatility leads to high volatility and as mentioned above no one can really know how it shakes out except immediately (in a relative time frame) prior to the move.... Usually there is a period of consolidation and it looks like for the next week or two we could have a tight range, but only way to really get a feel is when you start getting some swinging in the market to help tell you which way its gonna go....

Gold sits right on its long term trend. POG today is $1244, and the trendline is $1237, so no need to call GATA .

We have low gold volatility inside a strong resistance range ($1240-$1260). It can explode to the upside or go down, IMHO back to 1160 where I would buy (missed it last time).

People I respect, including our own icm63 on another thread yesterday "Gold (GLD) showing a very healthy Gann formation", expect a breakout downward.
Our Bart said the same quite some time ago, expecting a down move to $1104 an ounce as I recall.
Though I'll continue to hold my physical for the long haul, I actively trade GLD.
I sold that monday because it felt like the little rise of the last couple weeks was over.
I took 2 bucks a share gain and am waiting for a big drop to buy back in.

Very possible... The thing is when price rallies like it did in the last couple of weeks without first going into a consolidation range (tightening back and forth price action and then exploding out if it); it usually corrects back and attempts to test the lower until it makes either a higher low and goes higher or goes into a range

But, then there is also silver which seems like it may be about to break out.... If it does, will gold stay down?

If I remember the great Finster, consolidation means an impending increase in price, volitiity means a drop.

Seems like a total lack of interest, nothing more.

Those who are in the deflation camp have piled into bonds. Those in the reflation - recovery camp have loaded up on emerging market equities. Those who have physical bullion have no real interest in selling [unless they are buying land in India, apparently]. What's not to like about this situation?

I'll let you in on a secret: I use myself as a contrarian indicator. Normally i'll wait too long to buy and then when the price rises like it just has, I pick up 1/3 of my position. Inevitably the price drop and that is when I put on the remaining 2/3. I'm thinking of buying soon
