Ending prohibition in Mexico

A record number of homicides in Mexico is forcing President Felipe Calderon to open discussions on a new strategy in the war on drugs: legalization.

Personally, I think this is a symptom of increasing leisure time and wealth the world is faced with. As the need to work to cover the basic necessities (food/shelter/clothing), some people aren't opting for greater material luxuries but instead are preferring just to be stoned all the time.

Or playing farmville / World Of Warcraft, take your pick.

This creates a demand for these drugs that is now causing Mexico to realize that it just isn't going away and perhaps joining 'em instead of beating 'em is probably the right answer.

I was always under the impression that the US market was the major source of income for Mexican drug cartels. In that case they'd be better off with US states legalizing recreational drugs.

Yeah, depends, if they can swing it without getting the borders closed. Can you imagine the boost in tourism?

That was my thought exactly. I think any serious political movement to end the War on Drugs would be met with staunch armed resistance from the criminal gangs that benefit from it, however.
