That is how the orthodox use the label "conspiracy theory", yes.

More often than most, though less often than yourself it seems, I will favor just such theories. In this case however, I figured he just had a heart attack and died.

If you have an alternative explanation that you would like to describe, go for it.

He probably died of embarassment after his ludicrous, doomsday pronouncements about the BP leak didn't pan out.

I think one can think of the media as another black box, where the public can not verify and validate the inputs into that black box system nor the processes that that black system utilizes. All we have are digital outputs. Hence, it becomes extremely difficult, if not impossible, to validate these outputs. Therefore, all aspects of this story, including his earlier rant against BP, can possibly be divorced from reality as we know it. When wagging-the-dog has no checks and balances, all alternatives are possible. So, all we can really do is cross check the media outputs with known oligarchical goals and commonly used techniques of propaganda. With these tools in hand, I believe there are other plausible options to explore. I start with assumptions that can explain the societal impact of the media story, and then try to reverse engineer from there. In this case, fear of speaking-out against the system is clearly one possible societal impact that one can glean from this ongoing story.
