  • Matt Simmons dies of heart attack

Matt Simmons, founder and former head of Simmons & Co. International, died on Aug. 8 at his home in Maine of an apparent heart attack.

Simmons earned the respect of his peers with his successful energy investment bank, as well as a name for himself with his fearless and brazen predictions on the future of energy. His 2006 book “Twilight In The Desert” brought the term “peak oil” into the mainstream and ruffled more than a few feathers at home and abroad.

    Houston Business Journal

Thank you for making me think long and hard for many years about oil.

While conspiracy thinking is very much a part of every website such as this, I wouldn't be surprised if what you say was true.

My guess is you're wrong. He didn't look or sound that healthy to me, he was under stress, and he wasn't really causing the elite any serious problems.

Well, the real reason I'm not buying into that conspiracy theory (murder) is because I already have my pet Matt Simmons conspiracy theory. I figured he was set up to play the anti-thesis side of a typical thesis, antithesis, synthesis Hegelian dialectic intended to push a global carbon trading tax or shut down Gulf oil or some other such nefarious objective.

Also, if he knew he had heart disease and if he often went into a very hot hot tub or took very hot showers, I don't think that was a good idea because while it may feel good, heating the blood increases its tendency to clot.

His behavior seemed to me to have changed suddenly in the last few months, and I had been wondering if he was possibly having some kind of dementia or had had small strokes that changed his behavior. I have seen that happen to relatives.

I'm sure there will be a very careful autopsy.

He made me think about oil long before it was trendy, when academics would roll their eyes, so am very grateful to him for having brought so many issues to my attention, whatever one may think of his motives.

"In the history of the petroleum era, Matt Simmons will be remembered for calling attention to 'peak oil,'" T. Boone Pickens, chairman of BP Capital LLC, said in an e-mailed statement. "You had to admire his advocacy and his ability to focus on the need to better prepare for a new energy future."

This says cause of death was drowning, with heart disease possibly contributing.

Thank-you for your kind words and respectful remarks, mooncliff. That's a better direction for this thread than the one I was on.

Can you prove that he is no longer alive? Do we know anything other than what some media sources tell us?

So, for those that don't see your hypothesis, which are the majority, what message does his supposed death send?

The message it sent me was don't get drunk in a hot tub with a weak ticker.

Since my heart is strong, I have no hot tub, and I don't get drunk ... I figure I'm good to go.

Did I miss a good conspiracy theory here?

I thought he was losing money on his BP shorts and couldn't take the pressure.

You know, why does everything go into the "conspiracy box" just because it's not part of mainstream (or even mainstream-alternative) discussions?

There are alternative scenarios that are logical and that fit within 5GW SOP. Just because the public is not exposed to these, makes them no less plausible, or likely.

Again, the discussion here is largely based on the assumption that the media is providing information that is relevant and mostly factual. I see no reason to assume either.

No, I don't know. Perhaps you know.

In general, ones credibility is at risk when one steps outside mainstream & alternative frames of explanation, for to be perceived as credible and intelligent, one generally must leverage existing frames from existing references already widely accepted as credible.

Conspiracy theory is a powerful negative image assigned to those that step outside these frames, either by conveying messages specifically designed to fit within the conspiracy-frame or by espousing frames that are not referenced anywhere in the mainstream. In today's world, citing references at-length is now rewarded while independent thought not embedded in these references is typically castigated.

Ultimately, it's a negative label meant to engender fear of alienation from the group and therefore it is employed to squash independent thinking that is not aligned with acceptable norms. It's deliberate semantic segmentation.
