  • Greece Fuel Strike Stranded Thousands of Tourists

Greece fuel strike by truck drivers has stranded thousands of tourists. Greece fuel strike has stranded tourists traveling with cars from neighboring countries as Greece faces huge fuel shortage.

Nationwide strike of truck drivers has not only dried up fuel but also created shortage of medical supplies and food in some regions. According to officials some 100,000 tourists from neighboring countries like Bulgaria, Russia and Serbia who are traveling by car have stranded as most petrol pumps dried out in Greece.

Thousands of tourists have abandoned their cars and in unprecedented move Greece officials are beseeching visitors to stock up on fuel in Macedonia. Tourists are very angry with the situation. Hotel Industry has said that booking from neighboring countries has some down to zero.

Even ferries don't have any fuel which has stranded thousands of tourists on the docks not being able to reach their destinations. A couple could not reach even on their own wedding.

Situation in Athens is getting tense as capital too runs out of fuel. Greek Prime Minister has ordered truck drivers to get back on work else they will face huge penalties including being stripped of their licenses and their vehicles will be requisitioned.

*Striking fuel drivers in Greece said negotiations with the government have collapsed. The drivers are protesting an overhaul in licensing rules that are among the measures the government agreed to in order to get loans from the International Monetary Fund and other European countries. The strikes, which have already lasted for five days, have triggered gasoline shortages across the country. Greece's government said it has not ruled out ordering civil mobilization to get supplies moving.

Good luck Greece, once tourists decide not to come it's game over.

I'm in Greece now. I just recently passed by the only gas station with gas near the capital city of an island. The line of cars to the pumps was almost a half mile long. My local greek friends here are frustrated thinking it's typical of Greek stubborness and powerful unions. I told them that the underlying global issue, the financial crisis, is affecting everyone - it's just that the manifestation of it, the symptoms, that vary by region and country.

I see things like this becoming much more common, in ways that no one can anticipate.

The best way to experience Greece is from the helm of a sailboat...a new waterfront view every day, and not much need for fuel except a wee bit of diesel for docking and anchoring.

Striking truckers clash with police, Greek military to provide fuel relief

Truckers in Greece continue to defy an emergency back-to-work order from the government. Meanwhile, Greek military trucks and vessels were dispatched Friday to relieve the country's growing fuel shortage.

          Not really.

The problem is that if you have a Greek flagged sailboat, and enter Turkish waters, you should expect your vessel to be impounded immediately and permanently [and vice versa]. The advice I got when [charter] sailing in those waters was that if the yacht got into trouble it was much better to abandon ship [into the dinghy] and let the damn thing sink than put into the opposite nation's port, if it was the closest haven. At least if the vessel sank the insurance company would pay.

If any iTuliper's are having trouble understanding the basis for the above, I suggest you look up the recent history of Cypress.

quote from the end of this article:
"Public discontent combined with the lack of centripetal political guidance results in the rise in power of centrifugal forces of all sorts," said Caillol. "This crisis is directly connected to the end of the world order as we know it since 1945 – and even earlier since the European colonization process. Therefore, the whole global fabric centered on the US for 60 years is slowly collapsing, generating turmoil of all sorts."

"There are no organizations behind this response – it's a public response," said Celente. "This is a 21st century rendition of the 'workers of the world unite'. The people are fully aware of the enormous bailout going to the 'too big to fail's' that they are being forced to pay for. The higher the taxes go, the more jobs that are lost, the greater the levels of protest."

Full article here -but I think the last 2 paragraphs are a good synopsis. http://www.dw-world.de/dw/article/0,,5547861,00.html

Some time ago, I dated a woman from Greece. Which, of course, is a story unto itself.

But more germane to the your post, by the third date, I was fully briefed on the history of Greece and the duplicity of her Muslim neighbors.

For that matter, she wasn't too crazy about the Roman Catholic Church, either.

Well don't feel too bad. Some time ago I dated an economist who by the third date had fully briefed me on the "The Condition of the Working Class in England in 1844" [Freidrich Engels], which is apparently the socialist slant on economics that Canadian universities teach.

By the time we married her family hated me for the distinctly "raving-capitalist, exploit-the-workers" tendencies she was starting to show. But all ended well because I am now her mother's favourite son-in-law. Unlike the unreformed others, I am the only one that has never asked to borrow money from her...
