    J thinks one reason Lynch did it was to get a leg up in valuing the derivatives ahead of the upcoming rout.

    Could be some damn expensive market research.

    My guess: Merrill sees the writing on the wall, and is the first (and smartest) rat to jump off the ship. Somewhere in the past I remember EJ talking about major banks failing, and I'm wondering if ML has identified now as the time to retreat and play defense to ensure survivorship of the company, and in the process of jumping off the ship they are happening to be stepping on their cousin bear stearns.
