  • .xxx domain

    Well, it was on bloomberg.

    http://noir.bloomberg.com/apps/news?...d=afRFFj_4LyZI

I have to say. I love how this guy is going to make a huge bundle of money and basically corral the whole internet porn industry in one swoop.

Now that's the way to make money.

And Flash is DOOMED as the entire online PORN industry is moving to HTML 5. (Wish Itulip would too, no flash on my Iphone)

        Re: .xxx domain

Not clear what is so entrepreneurial about .xxx

This is a clear intermediation play.

While I am not an expert, I don't see .xxx making any difference at all.

Despite the multitude of .biz, .net, .mobi, .whatever domains - .com is where all the action is followed by .org

The rest are generally just more ways to spend money relatively worthlessly - though I did register a .me domain recently...

          Re: .xxx domain

Well for one thing is it nice that parents can just block all .xxx domains in the filters they set up for their kid's internet use (not an excuse to be hands off while your kids are surfing the net, that is not acceptable in today's day and age, but a useful tool to add to the toolkit).

            Re: .xxx domain

i think all porn should be pushed to .xxx so we can just filter the whole thing and be done with it.

                Re: .xxx domain

Yes, but the problem is unless you force all porn web sites to only .xxx, there's no benefit.

And the existence of .xxx does not mean there's a hard requirement - so to speak.

The companies that serve content have as much a vested interest in getting around filters - though not specifically for children - so will almost certainly maintain .com, .xxx, and a few other mirror sites.

As I originally said, this is a straight intermediation play.

I could spend $10M and create a .itulip top level domain, but iTulip would have no obligation whatsoever to buy into iTulip.itulip

In a perfect world. However in this world can you define "porn"? You can define it for yourself. You can't for me.

porn is an image that arouses me.

                      for me, a woman.

                      for others, a man.

                      for others, a horse.

                      for no one...

The movie and magazine industries do a pretty good job. Anyone can buy Maxim or National Geographic but you have to be 18 to buy Playboy or Penthouse. The difference between PG-13 and R can be a little fuzzy but movies rated X are pretty easy to spot. Corralling XXX sites into one top level domain would help parents, even if it wasn't a perfect quarantine.

But this doesn't corral porn sites anywhere. I see nothing here that would move porn sites out of the .com or other top level domains. Rather I see only something that would cause porn sites to also maintain .xxx domain names. This helps
                            1. That guy who is collecting $60/year per .xxx site.
                            2. Porn sites have another way of branding their work, by means of an .xxx domain name.
                            3. A few lecherous old men whose technical skills were so deficient that they couldn't find porn on the Internet without this hint.

In short, this doesn't get porn out of .com. It provides another name space to access the same porn as before.
Most folks are good; a few aren't.

Come on cow, it's the wedge in the door. You know that.

This is how it starts. Once it's there it will be easy
for countries to come up with laws.

This also protects free speech as people can't
complain so amuch about porn because
it's so easy to filter. Win win
