THose questions are complicated because you have to factor in dividends if you're looking for return, and then everyone gets taxed differently on the dividends so it becomes even more complicated.

I wouldn't be suprised to see a total return of 11%.

Thank you Gentilmen, now next question:- Is there anyway to buy into the S&P 500 as in a bond or something that would allow you to enjoy that sort of return ?(less dealing costs).

um, that seems kind of like an oxymoron... to buy into the S&P 500, generally you just go with an index fund. Bonds, you are lending money to the companies in the S&P 500 so that question doesn't really make sense to me.

If you want to "buy" the S&P 500, you have a few ways to do it. The Fidelity Spartan 500 fund is basically the S&P 500 in a mutual fund with the lowest cost out there (.09%). Vanguard 500 Index VFINX is vanguard's offering with a slightly higher management cost (like .17%). The advantage of these index funds is that you get the return of the market with very low fees, and most managed funds do not beat them in 10-20 year increments. There are also ETF's, for example the most famous one is SPY, which i believe is the first ETF ever traded on an exchange (also created by vanguard). I highly recommend going to fool.com and clicking on the 401k link on the left side for the basics of this, they explain it really well.

Mega - you are a laugh-riot. You must be the biggest extrovert on these forums. If there's one thing to be observed about you - you are not shy to ask any question! More power to you, our Liverpudlian friend! Extroverts rule OK!

If you don't ask, you don't find out..........Perhaps i am not the brightest guy on this forum, i don't think "EJ" or you guys will be stunned by my market forcasts (although they far better than some of the fools Bloomberg has on time & time again).

No, my hope is to read & learn...........my hope is that one day even "EJ" himself will say.........." Well he is asking the right questions......and even laymen are now wakeing up to what's happening".
                      You never know ;)
