Military Operations in the CNN World Using the Media as a Force Multiplier

    Abstract:
The informational media offers the operational commander exceptional opportunities to leverage the vast resources of fourth estate for use in military operations. The commander must consider using the media as a combat multiplier in a wide variety of areas within his operational design -- communicating the objective and endstate, boosting friendly morale, executing effective PSYOPS, deceiving the enemy, and enhancing intelligence collection. In an era where 'wars can be won or lost on the world's television screens', the operational commander must be pro-active and innovative in dealing with the media.

    Fake?

    From wikipedia

In January 2009, video[1] surfaced on YouTube of multiple takes and outtakes of a Gulf War newscast by Jaco for CNN purported to come live from Saudi Arabia. The video includes a pan of an apparent indoor studio as well as off-air talk wherein Jaco comments, "Oh, I love this country so much," while an off-camera voice adds, "...guys just don't have a clue."
Jaco threatened legal action in a letter[2] to Mike Flynn, editor of the PunchingKitty.com website, which carried the YouTube video. In his letter, Jaco responded to the YouTube video's allegations of false journalism:
First the facts of the case: our coverage was on the roof of a hotel and military facility near the intersection of the two main runways at the Dhahran Air Base, Western Province, Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. The playwood background was erected as a guard against sand and wind storms. The clowning around on the video is just that. We used black humor to deflect the tension of covering SCUD missile assaults.

I actually added the video as an afterthought, as an exclamation of the Army War College paper, which is far more interesting and enlightening. The paper maybe directly downloaded at the following link:

Imagery can hinder one from questioning ones own assumptions, especially if one is predisposed to believe the imagery, eh?

Yes, the imagery exposing said false-imagery can also be false.

What's the take-away from this knowledge? Hint, it's one of the last lines in a Matthew Broderick movie.

By the way, Did you read the military academic thesis?

The specific report is not news, correct.

But when I uncover a ten year old report of cockroaches in a house I'm considering purchasing, but do not find any particular evidence of subsequent extermination or cleanup efforts, then I have reason to suspect the house still has cockroaches.

So, though it (in particular) may not be news, perhaps it (in general) is still news.

                No I didn't read it.

He was going off the dateline, which he quoted. By "not news" he meant "not recent."
