From my view, government does have its place - and having its place, requires money to survive. Taxation is pretty much the only way for it to get money.

Printing and borrowing come to mind. You can, in fact, have a system where taxes only serve as a social control mechanism if you are able to keep up a stable rate of inflation and pay the government with the seniorage. A world currency could end up functioning like this.
