Re: Why the future isn't all that bleak

In this world we already get most of the needs met for us without any real knowledge of howthey are met. Have a look at the dan pink videos showing psychological and now economic research that autonomy, mastery and purpose are the motivators that generate the best result. For example, in the current workplace environment you get the best results if you pay someone enough so they don't have to worry about money and then give them the freedom to pursue mastery, autonomy and purpose - something communist systems never had. I don't see how this differs to technology providing basic needs and giving people the freedom to pursue mastery autonomy and purpose.

It is good to see an old discussion of political economy reemerging (it never goes away).

Still, I tend to keep in mind the old John Stewart Mill quote:
"It is questionable if all the mechanical inventions yet made have lightened the day's toil of any human being."

bet if you compare a 'day in the life' of a middle class american in 1900 vs today you'd see they toiled far more then.

back to the automated factory... good news for the shareholders & customers, not good news for the workers who used to cart boxes around. what to do? oh, i know... they can all apply to stanford to train to be biotech engineers...
