    Re: Dear Fred, EJ, Webmasters

I agree about the front page. I was turned on to itulip in early 2008, and was overwhelmed by that front page and didn't stick around. I tried again later in the year and got past the clutter. I'm very glad to be here now, and wish I had been earlier - those few months would have saved me a lot of money.

I do the same. Much quicker and I am right to where I want to be.

Sometimes having to work a little and sniff something out is a good thing. Maybe not for EJ's bank account, but for the entire community. If you were less of an inquiring mind maybe you would have never tried again.

TPC, you always seem to give me what I need.

I agree on the front page. I also wish there was a function that lets me know when posters I follow post something new. Say, everything that Bart or Finster post.

I agree that front page is way too busy. It is in need of a rationalization. I have sent 100's of people to itulip. Almost all say "Yea, I went there. Even after you explained it to me & why I should go & look see myself, when I did, I still couldn't figure it out"

To me, it appears that we need a short summary of EJ's theorum. It has appeared here, somewhere years ago. I doubt I could find it now. That is a link top right corner which links to a sticky page with the "Best of Itulip, Who's Who, chronology, theorum, read this first, etc.

I wonder if the nature of the posters here is fostered by the difficult front page. Easy surfing might mean lowest common denominator posting. iTulip is like pledging skull and bones, you need to have an intimate night with a sheep to get in. The front page is the sheep.

Edit: I have no idea how that smiley got there.

Thank you for the detailed requests. Will take them all seriously.

This will be our front page once we're done setting it up. Any day now!

                That includes upgrading the smileys

Where does one find the smileys?

                    Re: Dear Fred, EJ, Webmasters

One more suggestion: Make it easy to find the definition of FIRE, since the it's used so often and is at the core of the iTulip thesis. I've sent a number of very intelligent people to iTulip, and they all ask me what FIRE is.

Perhaps state the Raison d'être at the top of the page, e.g.,

"iTulip.com: Predicting the end of the FIRE (Financials, Insurance and Real Estate) economy, and what comes after."

That's an embarrassingly crappy example (I am not a wordsmith), but maybe you get my drift?

                    *Edit- addition:

Or maybe just hyperlink the word FIRE to a brief definition, so new people coming in for the first time can easily understand what the site is about.

cjppjc, when you post something, click the "Go Advanced" button for a selection of smileys and other features...

I'd argue that the fact that at least 2 people use bookmarks to avoid the home page means that the home page should be optimised, rather than everybody else should avoid it too.

That could be really useful but only if limited to new threads and not new posts.

I'm a current subscriber, recently switched to IE 8.0 (on Win XP) when viewing iTulip from Firefox 3.6.3 (same Win XP). Firefox was consistently hanging when trying to load the front page. iTulip site when viewed through IE still slower than I'd like, but content is outstanding, so I do what probably most people do - tabbed browsing. The alternate is a great-looking site that tells you absolutely nothing (like 99% of all financial sites).
