The US could have started its "Manhattan Project" on energy independence 20 years ago. Therefore, one could conclude that the current state is by design.

That would've required the Baby Boomers to absorb short term pain for long term gain, something that they have as an entire generation shown little-to-no ability to do...(sorry in advance to any baby boomers for the generalization - everyone is separate, but right or wrong, as a generation, this is going to be your rap, unless something changes drastically very soon...)

Representative Grayson has just become one of my favorite congress persons. I hope though he is employing a competent body guard service, as the elites who are profiting from the U.S. military spending would probably stop at nothing to silence him.

The blame is not to be put on the baby boomers for not embarking on energy self sufficiency. By the late 1970s, the road map had been laid for energy self sufficiency, and government contracts for the research work were being started -- you needed government contracts, because it was recognized that energy self sufficiency required a long gestation. The baby boomers were in there twenties and thirties at that time, and on the lower rungs of the decision making heirarchy.

But the election of Ronald Reagan changed all that. within two years, all civilian government contracts dried up. Some government contracts remained, but very few. Private corporate structure, with its emphasis on quarterly profit, had no interest in investing large sums of money from the corporate kitty for something that may show returns 10-20 years down the line. That may be one of the primary reasons for not going down an alternate energy path -- nothing to do with your so called self absorption of the baby boom generation. Rather blame it on the NeoConservative economists, who were a generation or two older than the baby boomers, and for the political idealogues who believed in them, and in so called "Market Efficiency" and in the ideology of "market knows best"

It was pie in the sky nonsense, Rajiv. At least that's my opinion unless I see some real evidence that energy self-sufficiency was remotely possible without ending up as an early prototype of Spain. The Department of Energy was created by President Carter to end our foreign oil dependency and has failed. How, exactly, could they have possibly succeeded when the failure has been so spectacular? Quadrupling of coal plants?

you have to wonder... why does youtube put up with that kind of language?

metalman's theory... a honeypot for lowlifes. collect a database of them... hand the names over to the elites & send them off to war when the time comes.

No, don't send the elites off to war. They might hurt someone useful over there. Send them to the FEMA camps. Now that's the ticket! :p
