Re: More Good Policy from Obama (Seriously)

    VAT is a terrible idea.

It won't raise nearly as much as anyone thinks it does - just look at all of the VAT scams - as well as black market activity/labor - in Europe.

Carbon taxes are also equally a bad idea. Everything generates carbon.

If you want to use taxes to redirect behavior - i.e. reduce foreign oil imports - then increase federal taxes on gasoline.

If you want to reduce energy usage, then increase property taxes along with gasoline taxes. Smaller homes = less energy use per person.

I completely agree with EJ and Dr. Michael Hudson: the problem isn't taxes - it is FIRE economic rent.

From our perspective, yes. However, I think the first point to be taken under consideration by the government when discussing new policy initiatives is, how does this help the bankers?

        Code:
Any increase in revenue will be accompanied by an increase in spending.
Bingo. It's not how much money you make but how much you spend. There is a limit to how much blood you can get from a turnip. Raise taxs, cut taxes that is all you hear from DC. No one wants to talk about cutting spending, especially on the big three. The military,SS and medicare. You make money it's taxed, you save money it's taxed, you spend money it's taxed you die and it's taxed again. The most laughable is cap and trade. Hey, let's take a normal component of our atmosphere and TAX it.! Now we can really make money out of thin air!

Whats amazing is the huge population of people who don't see the truth in the chart. When you think about it, its even scarier than the taxing and spending.

VAT + Carbon Tax + Property Taxes = Good idea

But they need to be done alongside serious cuts in the income tax, which really should go to ZERO.

Get rid of income taxes and it'll be an economic new day.

Another good appointment by Obama /snark

Obama Gives Key Agriculture Post to Monsanto Man
"Siddiqui’s record at the U.S. Department of Agriculture and his role as a former registered lobbyist for CropLife America (whose members include Monsanto, Syngenta, DuPont and Dow), has revealed him to consistently favor agribusinesses’ interests over the interests of consumers, the environment and public health (see attached fact sheet). We believe Siddiqui’s nomination severely weakens the Obama Administration’s credibility in promoting healthier and more sustainable local food systems here at home. His appointment would also send an unfortunate signal to the rest of the world that the United States plans to continue down the failed path of high-input and energy-intensive industrial agriculture by promoting toxic pesticides, inappropriate seed biotechnologies and unfair trade agreements on nations that do not want and can least afford them."

Oh, how I remember the Januaries on Vancouver Island a few years ago when ONE LEAF of "organic" and locally grown lettuce was packaged-up at the super-market, like a trout would be packaged, and sold for $1.

Locally-grown and "organic" and low-energy and with all the bells and whistles: $1 per lettuce leaf. And the dollar went to "sustain" the local pot-head economy and to sustain the hoodlums who carried hand-guns, dealt drugs with the Hell's Angels, and produced nothing of value for the world--- aside from their "organic" and outrageously priced lettuce leaf.

Sorry, but I do NOT read (nor care to read) about so-called pesticides in my food. Or if you worry about pesticides, you might worry about the natural pesticides in all living-things, including the deadly cyanide in cedar logs.

The pot-heads and their environmental police have done no good for humanity, whatsoever. And these pot-heads and their environmental police do not understand biology and operate above the discipline of science, even above the rule of law itself.
