High-speed rail trumps travel by air in China

By eTN Staff Writer | Mar 31, 2010

Within less than two months after launch, a new high-speed rail link between two major Chinese cities has resulted in the suspension of all inter-city connecting flights.

The new express train travels between Zhengzhou and Xian, running at a top speed of 350 km per hour has reduced travel time between the two cities from more than six hours to less than two. It takes just over an hour to fly, but Xian's airport is also located at least an hour away by road from downtown.Subsequently, only 48 days after the railway began operations, all Zhengzhou airport flights to and from Xian have stopped.

Before the high-speed link launched, domestic airline Joy Air which flew on the route used to be able to sell an average of more than 60 percent of seats. But soon all airlines flying within China will face this problem as the Chinese government continues to spend billions of dollars on a network of high-speed railways.
The network will include the route from Beijing to the country's financial capital Shanghai according to Reuters.

By 2012, China will have more than 13,000 km of high-speed railway, affecting carriers which currently profit from the country's large size and slow roads and trains. "By then, 60 percent of China's domestic air market will be affected by the high-speed railways," Liu Chaoyong, general manager of China Eastern told Xinhua.

A high commissioner doesn't get increased storage?

Ha....we took that train when visiting China. Sounds like the new one is quite the deal.

We've been trying to get high-speed rail in the US Northeast Corridor for decades. We finally got a "high-speed" train [Acela] that gets there about 20 minutes faster (DC-NYC) for nearly twice the price.

Because of resistance to getting new land to straighten the track, environmental impact fights, Amtrak/private/government funding and general nonsense there has been little progress.

This brought to mind a question -- what is the last MAJOR governmental infrastructure effort successfully completed in the US? I'm actually having a hard time thinking of one....

The interstate highway system? Although some would argue that it will never be "completed"...

Air travel works best over long distances and in cases such as India where the road system is so abysmal [and the Highways Dept so corrupt] that the only practical way to move around that large country reasonably quickly to conduct business is by air.

China was probably similar until the government started to invest such large sums into first roads, then airports and now high speed rail. The internal air transport system in China will simply adapt to serving those numerous destinations that are not served by the point-to-point-between-major-centers routes of the high speed rail network.

Europe is a good example. If you live in London, and you want to get to Paris or Brussels, the Eurostar train is a very civilized alternative to the indignaties one is subjected to at the hands of BAA airport security. However if you want to go to Prague for the weekend you'll be flying.

Thinking about it, only two come to mind at the time:

            1 ) New Denver airport
2 ) The "Big Dig" in Boston. Boondoggle originally estimated at 2.8B ending at over 20B I think.

The rest have been extensions of existing projects (i.e. the highway system, subway extensions)

Ha, my message storage limit is only 12? I wonder why 12?

In China, farm land is owned by the state, so if your land is in the path of the rail, I believe that it will be acquired by the authorities with nominal compensation.

Even in Singapore, this was what happened when they built expanded roads and metro lines back in the 70s and early 80s. People avoided buying houses near major road networks.
