Re: One step forward, 2 steps back: Government to go Sallie Direct

Actually, Raz, I think we will be fine once we pull our head out of our ass and realize we have the best food production capability in the world. Manufacturing is a second tier and important but if I had to choose between sitting on the best land in the world to farm and an oil field or the labor of Taiwan I would choose the land. Our political system is so out-of-touch they don't really know this about America or sell it. Too bad ... for now.

No kidding. Does everything have to be propped up by the government these days?

Talking about overpaid professors. I remember many years ago my computer professor( MIS actually), who happened to be head of that dept at UGA, at the time ranked as one of the best public business schools in the nation, would show up to class for perhaps half the classes. A few he had assistants teach. The rest of the time we were simply met with a note on the door saying, " no class today!". At the end of the quarter we were told everyone would get an "A" because he had failed to show up so many times. I graduated from that school disgusted at the level of education I received from a supposedly "good school". Hopefully it's improved since then. For the money it costs now it should.

Agreed. Below is recent The Ohio State University Recreational & Physical activity Center, price $140MM

..and the Adventure Recreation Center, for another $140MM ( cool climbing walls, etc.)

Just two example of a recent building boom on campus costing many hundreds of millions of dollars. This week we have the grand opening of the new Ohio Union building, $118MM. They tore down the old one, a huge and high quality building.

Universities and colleges need big, shiny buildings to impress the parents on the tour. It seems so much about college these days has little to do with actual education and more to do with entertainment and recreation. When my father took me on a college tour 15 years ago he kept comparing the schools to country clubs.

As the parent of a university student, I completely disagree with this idea and the general idea expounded on this thread. We interviewed universities like we would employees and agreed on one that seemed to be a good fit. It's expensive and I would like it to be less so, but I've no complaints and over the last three years I've been impressed with my kid's commitment and the university's commitment to her. I completely reject this idea of college in the US as a sham.
