Riddle me this...I live in Minnesota. It's winter. I want my electric car to keep the inside of the windshield clear of frost so I don't run over some kid in a school zone. I also want to run the wipers frequently so I can clear the road spray off the outside of the windshield...so I don't run over some kid in a school zone. And I've got the headlights on, because it's still dark when I start my morning commute, and I don't want to run over some kid... It would be nice to have some heat in the vehicle so my toes don't frostbite. And I want all of this on a zero-F. morning when the cold batteries in my car are operating at 40% of their normal capacity.

Having enough juice to charge my cell phone, listen to the traffic reports, and make it all the way to the office would be kinda nice too...

This is where GM is going to run into problems with the Volt. It simply isn't going to measure up in the real world compared to the other vehicles that GM sells [for less money] off the same showroom floor. And for those that still have not figured it out...this is the reason GM killed the EV-1. It wasn't a real car.

THINK electric cars opens plant in Elkhart, Indiana. No more RVs, many more of these: it is called progress.

The cars are already on the road in Europe, can re-charge 0 to 80% in 15 minutes.

If you do not understand how electric vehicles are the future, well...then I can't help you

You need go no farther. Zero is only scary for wimps. -25F is more like the real problem. Volkswagen had the same problem in the 60s but solved it quite neatly. A gasoline fueled catalytic heater, dealer installed, made the car toasty in three shakes of a lamb's tail. This aftermarket unit comes close. Just add a gas tank and fuel pump to the electric car and you are set.

Now, gas-backup electrics with an engine for greater range could start the engine and run for heat and accessories. Until people are ready for compact cars again I think the all electric car will be a total bust. But until people are ready for compact cars again, all cars will be a bust soon enough.

        Stewart Warner
        Gas Automobile Heater
        Information:
        Very nice original condition

Been in indoor dry Montana storage
No rust or corrosion and intact
perfect accessory to make 1930-1960's cars 'period correct'
Keep nice and toasty in old cars

link to southwind heater manual by lars brandow:

Stewart-Warner built two hundred South Wind heaters in 1935 but had to recall them because the glow plugs sometimes didn’t light and the flame tended to scorch the fan. An improved version arrived in 1936; by 1948 more than three million had been sold, and daily production was more than forty-five hundred units. The heaters fitted beneath the dashboard, where drivers could kick them on and off with their feet. Ads of that era showed young women sitting in South Wind-equipped cars saying, “C’mon in here … get warm with me.” During World War II large South Wind heaters kept military fliers warm; they were also installed in many ground vehicles. In the Korean War they warmed everything from tanks to jeeps to light planes. They saw civilian duty in school buses, motor homes, and ambulances and as preheaters for large diesel engines. You could buy them for Volkswagen Beetles well into the 1970s. South Winds are still being made for military applications and as diesel preheaters, but not for automobiles, where they have been superseded by improved systems using engine heat.

Please do let us know when you, your mother, your father-in-law, your sister, cousins, and at least half your neighbours on the block own one. Then I might become a believer...

We don't have the electricity for plug-in electric cars. Remember?

The pot-heads in the Greenpeace and the Sierra Club put a stop to dam construction and they mandated the closure of atomic power plants. They didn't want coal nor natural gas because of carbon foot-prints. Remember? They toked-up on pot and drempt about "smart grids" and windmills and solar panels. Remember? And computers were supposed to solve everything, so no need for commuting and no need for fossil fuels.

Who could forget Woodstock? The end of progress in America and the Western nations began with Woodstock and Earth Day. Around this time, the pot-heads at Cal Tech built a flimsy solar-powered car, and it set-out to cross the Mojave Desert from LA to Las Vegas. The media ran wild with pictures of the new solar-powered car. This was just after someone pedalled a pedal-powered prop-plane across the English Channel.... The pot-heads and Greenpeace took centre-stage, and the Green Movement was on in earnest.

Forty years on, next-to-nothing has been accomplished, and the West is in decline and bankrupt. The new Hitler in Tehran is ready to walk on-stage next.

In One Picture...why the electric car as a replacement for our existing cars is a fantasy. But check out that Body Fat number ...if we can figure out how to convert the "obesity epidemic" into transportation fuel we'll have it made...

                Re: Got Oil?

According to Jim Rogers, we are in the middle of a commodities bull market. He says in his book that it is an 18 year cycle. Same thing happened in the 70s and prices stayed high even after Opec ended their strike (probably wanted to make some $ off the prevailing price of crude).

Aside from the huge distortions from our financial crisis, it seems this pattern is holding. Were oil tankers sitting around during the crisis because they had no business, or because they were storing oil for speculators (banks)? It would explain the giant drop from $150 to $30, just like stocks & everything else (margin call).

I second this and add that it only gets worse for you friends to the north where it is -40F and dark half the year. They dread the day when demand for industrial feed stocks makes petroleum to expensive to burn in cars.

This is a direct result of law enforcement policy. Making it illegal to grow and enforcing the law based on on weight has lead to the selection for short indoor plants with high concentration.

For those that fall behind in their mortgage payments, the banks will set up clinics where you can get your excess fat lipo-sucked out for conversion to fuel in order to pay off your debt. Debt Serfdom modern style.

                        What's not to like?

Creates jobs, helps the middle class stay in their homes (the American Dream), enhances national security by reducing reliance on foreign oil, eliminates unsightly cellulite . . . and most important of all . . . gets the banks the money they are justly due for doing God's work.

Look for a Congressional bill subsidizing fat-reduction clinics any day now . . . .

                          .
This is all a bunch of nonsense! I tried this lipo-suck stuff and when I put that fat in my gas tank all it did was clog up my fuel injectors. I see liquid ammonia on the list and I know my body can produce it too, but I'll be damned if I'm going to try THAT experiment!
