Ron Paul wins huge victory in conservative straw poll

This is a shocker. Rep. Ron Paul (R-Texas) wins the straw poll at the Conservative Political Action Conference (CPAC) in D.C.

For Paul, this is huge, a major boost if indeed he wants to run for president. Though glasses of champagne will not be clinking at the Federal Reserve Board in Washington!

For conservatives, this creates a potential 2010 primary donnybrook if Paul chooses to run.


There have always been two strains of true populism in American politics. On the progressive side there are leaders such as Howard Dean. On the conservative side there are authentic conservatives such as Ron Paul. Neither President Barack Obama nor the banking and Wall Street Republicans are legitimate populists, and Sarah Palin is a polyester populist compared to Ron Paul!

Congratulations to Ron Paul for his stunning and well-earned victory at the conservative meeting. Paul is a true conservative in the classic sense who enriches our national debate and is respected by friends and foes alike.

Ron Paul will be 77 in 2012 is that too old? Reagan was 77 in 1980. I hope he runs again. At least when he speaks you know he stands for something. Many Americans don't know what that sounds like anymore. Especially recently.

Yes, it's too old. Considering Romney "the Usurer Neocon Mormon" came in 2nd, I think this is more of a case of a lack of leadership than anything else. CPAC, I have no doubt, is an absolute battleground between the neocon elite unable to grasp the monumental nature of their failure and the common man they consider too stupid to grasp the brilliance of the policy they advocate. Romney has absolutely no chance in a national election, so the fact he came in second means the Republican Party is effectively split, perhaps more so than at any other time in the post-war era.

What does it say about a nation of 300 million, reputedly the last remaining superpower (whatever that means), that there appears to be only one guy, 77 years old, with the gravitas and clarity to warrant serious consideration? I'd say the vetting process to reach national prominence is pretty well locked-down by interests hostile to the general welfare of the average American.

Okay, I guess I answered my own question.

My thoughts exactly. He is the only politician who has EARNED my vote. Unfortunately, he will never win. He would most likely suffer an "unfortunate" heart attack or stroke before TPTB would let the people have our way.

Ron Paul is extremely powerful right now. He can't be president, but he can pretty much guarantee a Democrat will be elected in 2012 if he wants to.

The Republican Party must obey him if they want to have a chance at getting elected.

With an impressive 31 percent of the vote, Rep. Ron Paul stomped the competition in yesterday's CPAC straw poll. But many in the crowd, those who might refer to Paul's supporters with a pejorative term that we won't touch, booed when his victory was announced. Weirdly, those in charge of CPAC may have been among the boo-ers. According to Politco, organizers "were plainly embarrassed by the results, which could reduce the perceived impact of a contest..." So embarrassed, in fact, that a spokesperson eagerly made sure reporters heard all the boos directed at Paul. Mitt Romeny, the winner of the past three straw polls, came in second with 22 percent of the vote. He was followed by Sarah Palin's seven percent and Tim Pawlenty's six percent. Indiana Rep. Mike Pence won five percent while Newt Gingrich and Chuck Norris's bro Mike Huckabee finished with four percent.

Agree 100%. This past election was the first I followed really close, well actually the republican primaries. These are a couple of things that I learned:

1. The Neocon and war monguering/religious faction of the republican party is well entrenched in the media, party leadership etc.

2. There are so many parts of the election that matter at the lower levels. There was some state, Louisiana comes to mind, where at lower levels the neocons were so entrenched young RP voters who tried to get in positions in their local republican party faction but couldn't because they were blocked out.

3. Campaign finance reform and such other reforms are really just a way of Democrats and Republicans making it harder for those outside the system to participate. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QeHxS...om=PL&index=45

4. Although I was discouraged by how unresponsive most in the Republican party were to RP, the grassroots activity and ideas that emanated from te RP forums, meetups etc. was great everything from the money bomb, tea parties(the original ones not the palin/tancredo ones) to the ron paul blimp was great to see. And the fact that so much money was raised with virtually no media coverage, just word to mouth through the internet.
