Remember BYD? It's the Chinese car battery company that Buffett invested in back in 2008. The below article details their cost savings from blatantly copying existing designs.

Are there patents being violated on this kind of thing? I always see Chinese knock off items for sale on Ebay and wonder if that is legal to import. I'd would hope not.
