"Five-dollar registration fee for persons planning to overthrow US government
Terrorists who want to overthrow the United States government must now register with South Carolina's Secretary of State and declare their intentions -- or face a $25,000 fine and up to 10 years in prison.
The state's "Subversive Activities Registration Act," passed last year and now officially on the books, states that "every member of a subversive organization, or an organization subject to foreign control, every foreign agent and every person who advocates, teaches, advises or practices the duty, necessity or propriety of controlling, conducting, seizing or overthrowing the government of the United States ... shall register with the Secretary of State."
    There's even a $5 filing fee.
By "subversive organization," the law means "every corporation, society, association, camp, group, bund, political party, assembly, body or organization, composed of two or more persons, which directly or indirectly advocates, advises, teaches or practices the duty, necessity or propriety of controlling, conducting, seizing or overthrowing the government of the United States [or] of this State."

This is the new weasel way that state Attorney Generals have found to put people in jail. If you can't convict them of breaking any real laws, convict them on "failure to file" charges. They make virtually everything illegal and then get people on a technicality. This applies to a lot of other things most of us never know about until they pull it out of their ass. Almost every one of us breaks some petty law of some sort every day without knowing it. They seek to intimidate the people into submission by the threat of fines or incarceration. Beats actually having to work and get a prosecution based on facts and justice.

The only power any government has is the power to crack down on criminals. Well, when there aren't enough criminals, one makes them. One declares so many things to be a crime that it becomes impossible for men to live without breaking laws.

        Ayn Rand
They could apply this law to virtually anything that is not for the status quo. Support a candidate that wants term limits? "Thats's subversive. Threatens to overthrow the government. Throw him in jail."

The Democrat and Republican parties both want to "control" the government. Sounds like they need to register as a subversive group.

            Senator Shelby...scumbag extraodinaire...lock him up.

Tea Bag White Trashers....lock em up.

I guess this depends on your definition of government. Once you get into goverment then you are no longer subversive...so to get elected you basically have to lie your way in and then arrest all your competition...some reminds me of the U.S.S.R.

This means that the State of South Carolina can imprison for 10 years any and all members of any organization they want to take down. They just need to find or "cause to happen" such direct or indirect advocacy, advice, teachings or practices ... by anyone claiming to belong to or speak for that organization, then arrest the entire membership for not registering.

              This sucks.

And is likely unconstitutional as well. But one never knows how the Supreme Court goes on this.

There is a precedent. Al Capone was busted not for the numerous murders, robberies, and other crimes he committed, but for TAX EVASION. Just like South Carolina which put a tax on terrorism.

This may not be a bad thing after all.

I would think that this law would apply to Goldman Sachs, JPM (Wall Street, et al), wouldn't it? They are corporations, they have had secret meetings and have had former employees "controlling" government for their benefit. Are they registered?

How do we get the Secretary of State of SC to enforce this against Goldman?

What a joke. If I lived in SC, I would pay the $5 just for the courtesy of getting my name on the "list" of bad people. Of course, the problem with SC is that many of the folks there are still Confederate flag wavers. In fact, up until about 6 years ago the Confederate flag proudly flew over the state capital building until people demonstrated for them to take it down. Now it flies proudly for all to see right in front of the capital building. Anyhoo, wonder if any of these "patriotic" flag wavers will get locked up under this new law?
