thx for the mish post. he sez...

Budget crises in nearly every state are the defining problem right now, yet none of the other bloggers are talking about it. I am swamped with material and struggling to keep up.

Another reason why I have decided to join the Air Force.

hi - I saw your post the other day, and I quite frankly didn't know how to respond.

imho and please excuse my gratuitous advice since I do not know your circumstances - but if I was going to join the US military at this point in time, I would seriously start reading up on books such as the following:

        seriously

Nah, it's a good paycheck while it lasts, and you get priority access to health care and food, what's not to like.

Only downside is dying in combat, which I think at this point is a pretty fair trade-off. (Caveat, until it doesn't work, and I pretty sure you are right that that point will come eventually).

the strength of a country's military is directly tied to the strength of that country's economy

            no economy = no military

            imho

With some exceptions which prove the rule. DPRK is a great example. No economy, all military.

DPRK has a thriving drug and arms trafficking business that does support the military.

Except for the last many years, the roles have changed for the US.

AG, If you had no job, were offered a good job with nice perks, you'd probably take it. I would. I don't really see it being that different from any other job. You think Britain's empire was built on the backs of young men with great job opportunities? It was either take the King's schilling or starve in many cases. Not saying things are that bad yet, but has anyone seen the unemployment figures for young people?

If it gets to the point we have to drastically cut military spending, what do you think the economy will be like?

It's more risky working in a convenience store in a US city right now than joining the Air Force. Of course, that could all change in a flash.

Thinking about that. I heard that 90% of military jobs are not involved with direct contact with enemy fire. So, in the regard, the death issue should be put to rest. Learn a trade with the military if you haven't got one, like being a "cook" "admin" whatever, as long as you aren't going to get fired upon.

The only issue all other things being considered would be the morality aspect of working for the corps in securing their resources. If you have no qualms with that or you pretend to your self that you are really supporting democracy or whatever the party line is, then go for it.
