As an olympic sport it's artificially constrained into a very abstract game, like olympic fencing is.

In its broader traditional form it is as effective as any other martial art, training and conditioning very strong athletes who are tough fighters. I know several genuine tough guys in the art.
No other MA produces better kickers.

Great kicking skills agreed. Kicking someone in the head is a dangerous tactic on the street however.

I've personally seen it done in the parking lot outside a bar. Wheel kick to the temple. Recipient went down like a sack of potatoes, never knew what hit him.

And the traditional art diligently practices sweeps, take-downs, arm-bars and grappling.

Jesus wasn't a fighter, that's why so many rejected him. They wanted a warrior and instead they got a parable telling teacher who wanted to lead them to a better place.

I trained in TKD for a long time and have recently started up again. I'm also a lifelong Lutheran.

For me the line between acceptable sport and unacceptable abuse is the expectation of permanent damage. In TKD control and sportsmanship is fundamental. My sister was DQed from one tournament for drawing blood, even though the other girl was not seriously injured and continued on.

In many fighting sports like boxing and "ultimate fighting" where significant permanent damage is expected I draw the line. I will not participate or watch such events.

The toughness Jesus demonstrated was the ability to resist the temptation to be cool and popular. He understood where people were coming from, he didn't join them. Some folks are so determined to sell Jesus they forget to follow him.

              Several good points there.

No doubt, especially between highly skilled TKD practitioner and an untrained drunk in an open area. Depends on the scenario. Perhaps I'm just prejudiced as a practitioner of Krav Maga I prefer to keep it simple, no flash, just pain. Kicks in my world are for groin level on down.

'Course lack of flexibility might be a factor in my case.;)

I think any serious martial arts training - NCAA wrestlers, TDK, Ju Jitsu, KM -gives the same advantages. First and foremost is much ring time. Anyone who's been in a hundred fights can stay calm and think in a fight. Second, a set of well-rehearsed moves known to work well that happen without thinking much.

Arguing between the MA's is splitting hairs. The evidence of MMA seems to show that between highly trained fighters, Brazilian Ju Jitsu wins most. Royce Gracie won the most, though he was rather boring to watch. It was like watching a boa constrictor kill a rabbit - slow, boring, and inevitable.

Like LorenS, I am pulled towards the Asian MA's that have a strong emphasis on personal decency, respect and spirituality along with the combat training.

This thread is a perfect example of why religion is where it is today. Look at how this thread started and where it is now. Religion is the same. I'm not tring to say anything bad about religion per se. Everything starts out one way and somehow ends up in another direction. Look at this country. Can it be argued that this country has kept the original spirit?

EVERYTHING is either moving forward or it is moving backwards.
