Yes, true enough. If your DNS server went down and you only had what IP addresses you had added to your hosts file, you'd start missing out on a lot of stuff. Metalman's images wouldn't load; you couldn't follow Mega's links; life (well, internet access ) would suck.

I guess what I meant by saying it works was that I was agreeing with jtabeb when he said "it DOES work." He was testing specific IP addrs while (I presume) he still had DNS service available for "all those other address." Yes, it works so long as you have DNS service still available.

I just checked now and I have over 4000 entries in my DNS cache. We rely on more than just a few IP addresses.

Actually without DNS access, the itulip page will not even load! That is because page loading stalls until Google Ads, Sitemeter, Amazon.com load! And these I believe are only accessible through DNS Servers. When in India, I deal with that problem almost everyday -- DNS Servers there leave a little bit to be desired!

Ah - you bring direct experience to the discussion. Awesome.

If I found myself in India with a drain bramaged DNS server, the first thing I'd try would be switching to 4.2.2.1 for my DNS server. I'm not sure how well that would work however, half way around the world via some likely slow pipes.

Well it is a roughly 60ms to 400 ms difference, but still tends to work much better as I recall.

Ah, so a combination of 4.2.2.1 and your own local caching DNS server might be tolerable.
