Yes, true enough. If your DNS server went down and you only had what IP addresses you had added to your hosts file, you'd start missing out on a lot of stuff. Metalman's images wouldn't load; you couldn't follow Mega's links; life (well, internet access ) would suck.
I guess what I meant by saying it works was that I was agreeing with jtabeb when he said "it DOES work." He was testing specific IP addrs while (I presume) he still had DNS service available for "all those other address." Yes, it works so long as you have DNS service still available.
I just checked now and I have over 4000 entries in my DNS cache. We rely on more than just a few IP addresses.
