OOPs I should say there is NO scary inflation, last CPI mnthly stats were 3% or so, not 5% or 8%...

Check your grocery bill next time and count Actual AMOUNT of product purchased vs Amount Paid.

I've seen a about a 50% decrease in THESE terms over the last 6 months. Not even across the board, but noticeable. Some products MUCH higher, others same if no cheaper. But in aggregate 50% decrease is about right from anecdotal experience.

1. Indeed, gold is an inflation hedge, but then again, it is the hedge for any financial trouble/instability. If Bubbbbble Ben is not confirmed and Volcker gets to do some surgery, everything will go haywire. With all due respect to Volcker, US is much more socialist country now, it cannot handle any reality treatment. Everybody will scream for bailout and Volcker will be gone in no time. The only sustainable treatment for the US is the international market, where the US is losing its credibility and dominance. In this new (and relatively free) market US will eventually have to live with the idea that $US is not good as gold. AMOF, it is much worse than gold, which will be reflected in the price, inflation or not.

2. AMOF we cannot even talk about absent inflation. Gold is global inflation hedge, not just US inflation hedge. Indeed US has mixed inflation/disinflation/Ka environment right now, but does it apply to everybody?

What is the way for the people in China and India to preserve their wealth? Buy $US ? No. Buy gold.

If gold is down to $1000, I am buying, if it drops to $700, I am buying more.

Maybe a successful retest of the Dec 22 low moving into options expiry on Tuesday , but I don't expect to see anything dramatic in gold until we hear from the Fed mid-week. Any dollar-negative FOMC ruminations , e.g. , an extension of the MBS program (down to a paltry $101BB) , and it's game-ON for old yeller.

Never EVER in history have we seen a FIAT currency trump Gold.

(Anyone in the history of the ENTIRE WORLD have a single counter example)

And the big boys may use the next equity plunge as a reason to scare weak longs out of gold (those that brought above $1000), so they can buy buy buy below $1000 !

You miss my point, paper long ain't physical long (as in cold dead hands).

Have we not established that there is A WORLD of difference between the two?.

If the paper longs had any brains at all, they would liquidate comex, but as you said, they ain't that smart.
