Good to know about the color and sound- I am young enough to have never used real silver coins.

My point stands, that it would be a hassle to inspect each coin, even if the lot generally looked and sounded like the real thing. It would be easy to sneak in a few post-1965 quarters or dimes, which would be both ubiquitous and relatively worthless.

Imagine what would happen today if Monopoly games came with $1 and $5 bills that looked virtually identical to real ones, other than a slight variation in the color and quality of the paper. People would be trying to pass those things all the time! If someone paid you with a stack of fives and ones, you would roll your eyes and assume the guy was trying to sneak some Monopoly money into the pile.

There has never been a time when it was best to pay for moderately large purchases with a shitload of dimes, and I don't think there ever will be.

people have been looking at silver coins forever and making sure they are real. I can't see the problem here.

Point granted. Given the premise of TEOTWAWKI and the official local currency is not accepted, what would you prefer to use?

For most everyday stuff, silver eagles or equivalent, with junk silver used to make change. For large purchases, gold, with silver used to make change. Of course, barter makes a lot of sense too.

Understood, but respectfully disagree. If TSHTF, I predict a silver dime will soar in value. It won't take ten of them to buy a doughnut.

It doesn't now. A real silver dime retails for around 2 bucks. It's the counterfeit dimes that are 10 for a doughnut.

As for soaring in value, you're still thinking in fiat. Generally speaking, a silver dime has always bought a loaf of bread, and will likely continue to do so even if a loaf of bread costs $1,000 fiat. JMHO

Actually, you don't need to bite them or look at the date. Just turn them on edge and see if there's any copper color.
