My point stands, that it would be a hassle to inspect each coin, even if the lot generally looked and sounded like the real thing. It would be easy to sneak in a few post-1965 quarters or dimes, which would be both ubiquitous and relatively worthless.
Imagine what would happen today if Monopoly games came with $1 and $5 bills that looked virtually identical to real ones, other than a slight variation in the color and quality of the paper. People would be trying to pass those things all the time! If someone paid you with a stack of fives and ones, you would roll your eyes and assume the guy was trying to sneak some Monopoly money into the pile.
There has never been a time when it was best to pay for moderately large purchases with a shitload of dimes, and I don't think there ever will be.
