Clearly, the "PIIGS" acronym is racist.

Race superiority must always be "justified" to the people: now that US has a black president and that the catholic-protestant religious argument is quite weak may be the MSM will use an economic argument to justify the coming massacre of the diverse.

Given that the citizens of Portugal, Italy, Ireland, Greece, and Spain are overwhelmingly Caucasian, how can the term "PIIGS" be racist?

I completely agree, after Ireland's population changed race and joined the up-to-then PIGS it clearly shows that the term is racist! :rolleyes:
The fact that their fiscal discipline has been disastrous for years (well, at least Ireland has been able to have a boom before joining the PIGS), is completely unrelated.

Eh -- good acronyms often have a non-PC twist to them. That's part of what makes them memorable. This one (PIIGS) is fairly mild in my view. Much depends on the attitude of the speaker. Even ordinary words have that trait: "bush" is a term of respect amongst my conservative friends, a repugnant term to my liberal friends and a vulgar play on words to a few.

A few things off the top of my head . . . .

Vote in Politicians who will enact the following (or get kicked out of office the very next election):

1. Create regulations that will control the bankers, and make it a criminal offense to not enforce those regulations.

2. Break up the Big Banks. Re-instate the Glass-Steagall Act to separate gambling institutions from "straight" banking.

3. Place heavy restrictions on Banks, including pay caps. No more bonuses. They can choose whether they want taxpayer assistance or not, but if they accept it, We dictate the conditions. If they don't like it, let them fail . . . after they give back Our money, plus a percentage of the profits they made.

4. Stop the revolving door between Financial Institutions and Government.

5. Ban corporate campaign contributions.

6. Enact the Congressional Reform Act (google it)

7. Put those who committed financial fraud, favoritism or insider trading in jail.

And then, there's always: Boycott the Big Banks, Vote Out the Incumbents . . . . .

In France ( a traditional Catholic country ) there is a deep distaste for what they refer to as "Anglo-Saxon" influence and ideas. This is a euphemism for protestantism. For instance Jessie Jackson is referred to as an "Anglo-Saxon". Yet PIIGS doesn't seem to extend to France ( why mess up a libelous abbreviation ).

How about F 'n' PIIGS?

I think it is simply a simple way to remember the countries involved just as BRIC is. I think you are putting to much into it. What would you have used instead?

I agree, though to be fair PIIGS is a lot more negative than BRIC.

I remember several years back at University an Asian acquaintance began objecting to the term "oriental". He said it had a negative racist connotation. People have the right to be called whatever they want, but it seemed silly to me, since "oriental" only means "from the East". I wonder if, in twenty years time, whatever connotation "oriental" acquired won't be passed on to the now preferred term, "asian".

If Bernanke and Greenspan had set interest rates high enough above the rate of inflation, there would never have been a housing bubble and there would not now be a need to re-regulate the banking industry. I hold these two idiots (Bernanke and Greenspan) and their excessively accommodative monetary-policies to blame for the mess we are in now.

As far as Congress is concerned, it should be a crime in the USA to accept a bribe or to offer a bribe in exchange for a vote in Congress. And why isn't that a crime? (It is a felony crime in Canada.)
