    This was discussed here several months ago. The best advice was to stop buying 400 oz bars. One oz gold coins are the preferred exchange anyway.

          the usa mint buys gold bars to melt them down to make coins. if a bar's tungsten they learn right quick it ain't gold... & the seller gets a visit from these boys...

              Right. I don't see a "statement" from the Chinese. Nothing like a bald assertion without backup.

                There are at least 4 easy and cheap ways to tell if a gold bar has a tungsten core:

                1. Static B field distortion due to para-dia magnetism.
                2. Electrical conductivity.
                3. Thermal conductivity
                4. Acoustic (speed of sound) measurement.

                No drilling required.
