  • Trouble in River City.

For past couple of days, I have been occasionally getting a message here at iTulip when I have tried to submit a post: The server is too busy at the moment. Please try again later.

Is this happening to anyone else?

If so, what is the problem, Fred? It has costs me a couple of posts.

Also, now when I click New Posts, it does not show this tread which I just put up a few minutes ago; however, if under Quick Links I click Today's Posts, then this thread shows up.

Something seems amiss, at least to me it seems so.

Glad you mention it, Jim. I noticed the same thing on both counts. I usually look for the latest activity on the New Posts list, and even though it has been getting traffic, the thread "Trader believes "Poom" (dollar repatriation) is occuring" doesn't show up there. I nearly missed your replies. The second problem is frustrating because - okay, so the server is busy now - but you can't just try again later, because everything you just typed is lost. You ought to at least be able to hit your brower's back button and actually - gasp - go back. You can avoid that by copying from the window out to a local document to do your composition and then back again when you're ready to post (and that can be useful for other reasons) but you also lose the online compositional tools while doing so, so it's still useful to be able to do final editing in the BB software without fear of losing your work.

i don't like the behavior of the new "new post" feature either. if you look at a thread and then hit "new posts," it will no longer list that thread, so that if you then decide you want to add something you've got to go searching to try to find another link to that thread. i've sent several comments to "fred" on this, and suggest others do likewise.

Mostly it needs to decide what it wants to be. It's fine to have a listing that just shows stuff you haven't looked at, but it would be nice to still have some listing that lists the posts available to the user (e.g. public, select, premium, or whatever) beginning with the most recent, irrespective of what subforum they were posted in. As the number of fora have proliferated, so has fragmentation and the risk of losing track of a good discussion.

i strongly agree. i just got a post from fred saying it's fixed. i'll know after i submit this reply and then go to "new posts." if there is no "yes!" post following this one, then it's NOT fixed.

It is not fixed, once you access a post listed in the New Posts it disappears, since one is accessing one's post when one writes it, it apparently is not appearing on the new posts list for that poster.

that is how it looks at the moment.

better use Today's Posts until and if it gets fixed.

The first problem may have been fixed ... I just got the "Server Busy" message when attempting to post, and this time when I went "back", my text was there, in all its dubious glory ...

All feedbacks are noted and greatly appreciated.

As you know, the Forum software has just been upgraded this past Friday (5/11) to the latest version and so there may be some changes in it's behavior that we need to learn about. Feel free to drop your experience, feedback & suggestions to us at forum@itulip.com

                    1. Re "New Posts" feature -
According to VB forum software developer, there is no changes in the upgrade version in terms of New Posts behavior. And so we're investigating it's cause and please be patient with us.

                    2. Re Busy Server message -
We are experiencing few growing pains. Regret the inconvenience. Upgrade to a "bigger" server is in our "Next To Do" list.

Thanks all again for your patient and important feedbacks.

                    All the best,
                    Ed.

A Marine sergeant was faced with telling one of his recruits, Smith, that Smith's mother had died. It was a dilemma for the sergeant as to how to break the bad news. He faced his recruits who were at attention and said, "Everyone whose mother is alive, take one step forward." and then "Not so fast there, Smith."

It seems to me that a few times with the busy message, I was able to go back, but not every time. So, perhaps, not so fast, Finster.

                        All the best,
An update note to my earlier one.

VB, our Forum software developer, announced a newer V.3.6.7 release when two days after our V.3.6.6 upgrade. And we'd quietly completed another upgrade to V.3.6.7 this past Thursday around mid-night EST.

Also, a series of improvements to our hosting servers has been made and that shall have immediate and beneficial effects to iTulip members in terms of sever speed and performance.

In regards to New Posts feature -

Nothing is amiss about New Posts feature and behavior. There may be some myths about it's functionality. And allow me to clarify that the New Posts will not update if you are logged in. It will only show what's new since you last logged in.

It is misleading that an user's newly posted thread will be shown in New Posts while the user is logged in. User can use Today's Posts to see what's new and your newly posted thread.

                        Thanks,
                        Ed.

                          Re: Trouble in River City.

Setting aside for the moment the question of whether and to what extent the behavior of the New Posts feature works differently than it used to, we still need some functionality that allows us to list posts irrespective of what board they're on. Ever since the changeover, I've had a devil of a time returning to a discussion, losing track of several excellent threads. There are just too many boards and having to remember which board a thread happened to be on just shouldn't be necessary.

This is the case regardless of whether I happen to recently have visited a thread. Often I find a New Post to reply to and then go to another area of the forum, perhaps to research some point relevant to the reply. Then I go back to the New Posts listing to complete the reply, and if it only lists things it thinks I haven't seen yet, it's gone! I've lost count of the number of times this has happened since the changeover. It doesn't matter whether the post is new just today, new since I last logged on, or whatever, it just needs to be somewhere I can find it without having to iterate through a series of boards or experiment with search terms.

Not that you guys can just whip up custom software on a whim (having done a five-year stint as a developer I do understand). But please at least get word back to whoever is doing the developing that we want to have some listing that lists the posts available to the user (e.g. public, select, premium, or whatever) beginning with the most recent, irrespective of what subforum they were posted in. As the number of fora have proliferated, so has fragmentation and the risk of losing track of a good discussion. And that just because technology makes something fancier and more complex possible, that doesn't mean it's better! "Today's Posts", "New Posts", ... they could vanish into the ether and we'd all be better off for it.

                          K.I.S.S.!

it is terribly frightening to learn that what i remember is only a myth. on the other hand, it's terribly reassuring to know that what is, is what always was. i love big brother.
