NEW YORK, Dec 28 (Reuters) - The U.S. Federal Reserve's balance sheet increased in the latest week, Fed data released on Monday showed, hitting its highest level in nearly a year.
The Fed's balance sheet -- a broad gauge of its lending to the financial system -- increased to $2.221 trillion in the week ended Dec 23 from $2.218 trillion in the prior week.
That was the highest since the first week of 2009, when the financial crisis was still relatively fresh.
