Re: May be we should all take Goverment jobs
I take umbrage with statistics like these.
They fail to mention the reason for there being so many more highly paid government workers is because the government is forced to compete with the private sector for skilled workers, and even at 100k+ salaries, remain far below private sector wages in the markets where these people are being hired. Even in this depression.
Primarily - these people are in DC metro and NYC metro. Kids out of college can earn 100k right away, or within a couple years if their skills are high demand in both those job markets.
A lawyer earning 170k at the SEC or at the FDIC or Treasury or IRS would probably earn somewhere between 2-3x their government salary in those markets.
I'm not a government worker, but I really don't see why this is some tragedy or terrible thing.

Re: May be we should all take Goverment jobs
When a private company is deeply in debt and revenues are off by double digits the response is virtually ALWAYS the same, cut expenses. Our government is increasing expenses right in the face of these same issues. This will not end well. Anyone who argues for raising budgets and wages during this time has no concept of history...unless, they want to see the destruction of the common stock of America: USD.

You'd need to look at total compensation over an entire career, including 20 years of extended vacation, paid overtime, less stress, job security, pensions, and of course health care.
I'm sure the equal skill level government worker is way, way better off as private labor in America has been crushed. Government labor still have strong labor rights and protections - that is worth serious $$ in itself.
and the government does NOT compete with the private sector labor as apples to apples, it is an entire different labor market, almost a government/military club.
Seems like 80% of high paying government jobs require "security clearance" - this creates a closed non-competitive job market (like lawyers). I read there was a 5 year backlog of people trying to get "security clearance" and hence into the high-paying government job club.
I applied 3 years ago for a government job, high paying, specialized skill set, and in high demand - no chance unless you have "security clearance".
I'm sure the US government could cut salaries 40% Jan 1st 2010 and only a handfull of people would quit.Last edited by MulaMan; December 26, 2009, 05:52 PM.
