Xmas Present-Rahm Emanuel's Resignation?

On Christmas Eve, Geithner removed the "caps on aid to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac for the next three years", according to a Reuter's blog. That 2012 date is an interesting coincidence, since it dovetails perfectly with the 10-year statute of limitations for any investigation of Rahm Emanuel's activities while on Freddie Mac's board from 2000-2001.

Apparently, Jane Hamsher, the liberal from Firedoglake.com and Grover Norquist, the conservative from Americans for Tax Reform noticed the interesting coincidence. They are now petitioning Attorney General Holder to demand an immediate investigation into Emanuel's activities.

There is a lot of troubling background information, as well as the petition to sign, if you are so motivated.

There might be something there but I repel at the though of anything to do with Grover Norquist. I guess he has new pals to hang out with now that his buddy Jack Abramoff is in the joint. He also belongs on a long list of people who screwed over Native Americans. Now he's a corruption watchdog. Shameless.

Most of the posters at Jane Hamsher's site Firedoglake.com share your point of view. However, one poster recommended doing what you consider to be the right thing, versus reacting to alliances.

I believe that an issue of corruption in government (especially regarding uncapped Fannie and Freddie debt) should stand on its own merit, regardless of party affiliation or personal sponsorship. Of course, as an Independent, that's easy for me to say.

Unfortunately I believe that our present Attorney General Eric Holder is one of the crooks. Petitioning him will serve no good purpose.

It's not a party issue. Our political landscape has become one lowlife calling another lowlife a lowlife. Democrat, Republican............it makes no difference.

You are probably right. But, we have to start somewhere, and I am encouraged when two opposing parties come together to fight corruption. At some point, we must take a few minutes out of our day to take a stand.

If this doesn't work, we can take it to a new level. Years from now, we can't look back, regretting that we took no action.

You make a good point stating that petitioning Holder will serve no good purpose. We will not be disappointed when he acts true to form.

There comes a point when the crooks realize the jig is up . . . and there's a rush for the Exit marked "Do The Right Thing Before It's Too Late".
The desire for self-preservation will do wonders to help some people suddenly find morality.

In short . . . public opinion matters. Sign the petition.

If it helps broaden the tent, my understanding is that Rahm Emmanuel was responsible for 1) making sure that no serious opposition to the invasion of Iraq was allowed to take root in the Democratic party 2) making sure that the final health care reform bill included no truly public option.

He takes care of the "base" - those paying for representation in DC - just as Cheney did for GW.
