Horror novelist Stephen King and his wife are footing the bill so that 150 members of the Maine Army National Guard can come home for the holidays. The soldiers left Maine last week for Camp Atterbury, for some training. In January of next year, they are scheduled to deploy to Afghanistan.
The couple donated $12,999 toward the expenses of the trip. King's assistant, said that King thought 13 was an unlucky number. “Steve is such a numbers person,” said Julie Eugley in an interview with the Bangor Daily News. “When we were approached for $13,000, he thought that number was a little unlucky. He didn’t want any bad whammies associated with these troops.” Eugley dropped the extra dollar to make the donation an even $13,000.
According to The Digital Journal, the money was solicited by Operation Community Support, a not-for-profit Bangor-based military assistance agency. The Kings’ donation is the largest ever received by the agency, and was given from their personal finances – not their foundation, according to Eugley.
The donation from King, a Maine native, will fund two bus trips for the 150 soldiers.

It is because the American military are not fighting for the American people, even though they believe are themselves, and not amount of retarded flag waving changes that facts.

They are fighting on behalf of a small group of special interests to protect the US dollar, oil industry, and other corporate interests.

Don't think that we are not aware of that fact, but we have to pay the bills too.

Nothing pays like war, except BANKING, of course.

The US armed forces are underpaid and overworked. Hence the desire to take early retirement and go and work for Blackwater.

That's how it was when I was in (68-71). The mil pays to move you from one duty station to the next, but if you want to go home you buy the ticket. The mil will help organize it, but personal trips are on the personal nickel.

Yeah the troops have to pay for their own fare home cuz if the military paid for them, it may take funds away from ferrying congressmen around the globe for 'fact finding trips'.
