Is that a good deal? I honestly don't know much about platinum.

In the case of exploding gold prices... where does platinum fit in? Where was platinum in the early 80's when gold was making record highs?

Would I own platinum for diversification reasons? Is platinum right now most likely undervalued (I remember last year platinum was around $2100 an ounce)?

I think many others would also like to be enlightened.

At $300 over spot...(only for JT; because it sells at about $50 over everywhere else): stay away. Big time.

Think silver instead, better potential for growth.

Skip that premium and buy the bars -

Platinum is a very thin market. The main reason for these insane premiums is that the US Mint no longer strikes the Platinum Eagle.

If you intend on adding Platinum to your PM holdings contact APMEX at (800) 375-9006 and ask when they expect to receive Platinum Maple Leafs, a far more beautiful coin in my opinion. They are a preferred dealer for the Royal Canadian Mint and will sell you (10) 1.0 oz. Maple Leafs at about $110.00 over spot (approx. 8% premium).

Currently the RCM only strikes a batch when they receive a significant order, so they are not constantly available like they were years ago. I know that APMEX is reputable because I purchased these same coins from them back in mid-March. They didn't receive them from the RCM until the second week of May and I received mine about May 20th. They are 2009 Platinum Maple Leafs and they're beautiful coins.

I'm attaching some research on Platinum that I'm pretty sure I posted on the "Gold Research" Thread under "Resources".

            Hope this helps.

i just bought 1oz plat bars from apmex at around $40 over spot.
i don't know a lot about the platinum market. but I figure a small position in pt is a diversifier for gold. gold has political value, and may be confiscated or taxed away. will pt be overlooked? I have seen some press about the uses of pt as a catalyst in chemical reactions such as the catalytic converter in your car. I believe that the industry is searching for a replacement metal. I do not know how successful the replacement metals are.
