Have you guys caught the latest in paper towels. An interesting spin on inflation. Many of them now are perforated for half sheets. We find we seldom use a whole sheet now. Not sure how the pricing falls on the stealth inflation curve. My guess are they were bumped up but you could easily use less. A "we're in this together" moment

This is a brilliant, brilliant thread btw. I now feel inflation viscerally, and I don't know the author but the quote 'he who increaseth knowledge also increaseth sorrow' has never been more apt than when applied to this topic.

Check out this thread on The Consumerist entitled "Grocery Shrink Ray." It has lots of examples going back-a-ways.

It is from the bible. It can be used as you have. It does speak to self knowledge.

                  That one's pretty good.

My favorite to date: 10 eggs is a dozen. Just think how that will play out on the young who's only reference to a dozen are the eggs.

Teacher: Timmy, how many are in a dozen?

                  Timmy: Ten!

Teacher: That's right, Timmy, very good. Now Sarah, how many ounces are in a pound of coffee?

Hell, I don't know .... (Sarah or teacher, your choice )

LOL - That's probably what my daughter would have asked. Good one.

                        Now, enough is enough:

Cadbury's Cream Egg has been resized to 34g from 39g (a 12.8% decrease in product):

Le poids de l'oeuf fondant Cadbury est passé de 39 à 34 g en 2009. Cette réduction équivaut à une baisse de 12,8%.

Ok, here is a second case for the day.

This one is hitting home especially hard, since it is my son favorite breakfast...so without further due, here is a Largo exclusive shot.

Product content down 17.4% - Note how the updated packaging almost hides the total package weight of 304g (bottom right) - in fact, you can hardly tell vs. the old package weight of 368g displayed in bold black at the bottom. Of course both box are the same size and they both contain the same amount of packets (8):

At the supermarket I might go down the candy aisle to check for 2fers. Otherwise, just healthier not having the stuff in the house (who says eating healthy is more expensive?). Tonight they had a 2fer on Ghirardelli. But when I grabbed two packages and lifted them off the shelf, I could hardly tell I had any product in my grip. I think maybe there were three m&m's in those shiny bags. Seriously, I shook one to see if there was anything inside. Then I made a face and put the product back on the shelf.

These carrots I got instead are delicious.

Yes, but these have 12.8% fewer calories too, which hedonically speaking, makes them 12.8% better for you, for which you therefore should get 12.8% more enjoyment. Ergo, inflation is actually 0% on this -- nothing to see here -- move along...

Interesting. This is also my 13 year old daughter's favourite breakfast. I just checked - and still have 3 boxes in the pantry - all 368g.

Was this a recent "switch" - perhaps with Ontario an early adopter ?

Geez - it's getting pretty bad when you can't trust a Quaker !
