Australians have the world's biggest homes: study

    Mon Nov 30, 2009 10:59am EST
CANBERRA (Reuters Life!) - Australia has overtaken the United States, the heartland of the McMansion, to boast the world's largest homes, according to a report by the Commonwealth Bank of Australia.
Research commissioned by the bank's broking arm, CommSec, shows the Australian house has grown on average by 10 percent in the past decade to 214.6 square meters (2,310 sq ft) -- nearly three times the size of the average British house.

Penis envy????? - It is a national obsession with big homes, they are our 401K's and no capital gains tax on the family home. Financially every thing goes into them, nothing old is allowed everything has to be the new thing, even the gardens and lawns are instant and sterile. No one ever thinks about the running costs and upkeep. A standard new home now costs 10x average gross salary. We however work the longest hours in the World and have no time to enjoy our home sweet home. I got off that hamster wheel and will never go back. Peak everything and retiring baby boomers should see a big rethink as the costs inevitably rise.

Something akin to it. Man has an ego to feed. Modern man is feeding that ego through money. In other times it was fed in other ways.

While I don't subscribe the the McMansion lifestyle......I can say with some conviction that over the past 12-ish months it's been an excellent time at the coalface here in OZ/NZ to purchase some building materials and to hire some builders.

In my opinion, a big bubble of building materials has been liquidated often at deep discounts to maintain cashflows and work backlogs of builders I know disappeared overnight requiring some to offer labour rate discounts to keep their staff and themselves working.

in the last 12 months we significantly upgraded our home's energy efficiency and reduced our home's cash operating costs.

For some, shrewd upgrades to existing homes in 2009 MAY turn out to have been a wise choice.

Alas, I'm still waiting on a deal too good to refuse for those wicked cool European triple glased Transformer-like windows I recently saw in Austria.
