  • Goldman Staff Packing Pistols to Defend Against Peasants

Watch out folks. Our great friends over at the Vampire Squid have another great investment idea besides carbon credits markets and high frequency trading. It's lead. Yes, lead. With gold and silver going through the roof, the Goldman folks are piling into lead via the purchase of handguns and ammo all under the guise of "personal protection." Seems J6P is a tad miffed about the oversized bonuses courtesy of the American taxpayer as well as the billions made in Fed approved market manipulation as part of the government's back door attempt to support equities. As all iTulipers are aware, the whole personal safety issue is likely just another ruse to allow the GS folks to frontrun and corner another commodities sector.:p

    Anyhow, for your reading pleasure:

The intersection of the economic fringe with the gun-nut fringe must be quite uncomfortable for Goldman Sachs executives. It's no fun when the people who revile you in the most extreme terms are also the people with ghillie suits in the closets of their remote cabins.

Mind you, I am one of those who reviles the excesses of the financial services industry, and am perhaps a junior gun nut. I'd also say that I am on the economic fringe. I don't use these terms derogatively. Neither do I think that physical violence is an effective tool of regulatory reform, in this case.

Well, you know -- with one 16-month-old and a second kid on the way, I just don't seem to have the time to make use of a gold membership. ;)

Thanks for posting that. Oddly, it solves a long-standing mystery (that I probably should have solved myself with a Google search). I had been wondering from where the phrase 'Regulators... mount up!' came ever since my squad leader chose 'regulators' as our call-sign for a training exercise, three years ago. Now I know.

Wonder how EJ's Jocks & Geeks fits into this development.

Jocks competing with one another over who has the most expensive and tricked-out concealed weapon.

                Geeks...?

My theory is that the geeks realize the folks gunning for financial hate figures are probably coming with rifles from concealment, anyway, and that a pistol won't be of any use for protection. I also figure the geeks are thankful that as technical employees, their names aren't in the headlines, and they don't necessarily look like the well-coiffed jocks who run the show. Safety in anonymity.

The title on nc.com is a little disingenuous. As the bloomberg article states, it's almost impossible to get a ccw permit in nyc and nj. Nys and ct are friendlier. So maybe the folks in nys and ct can "pack" when they're around their neighborhoods. The beginning of the bloomberg article talks about writing a reference to get a permit to purchase a gun. That sounds like nj. That person will get the permit to purchase 1 handgun (per permit) in 8 wks or so. Along with it he'll get a seperate nj firearms card that would allow him to buy approved rifles/shotguns.

It may also not only be potential persecution paranoia. These guys aren't stupid, and hedging is a big part of their lives. They may envision that the shit will hit the fan next year and they may want to not be caught with their pants down. I hope that they take this seriously, as the craft that it is. Newbies are, well, newbies.

Well, if you think about it, it must be very disconcerting for them. Their detractors complain about a return to "business as usual", but I can well imagine why an investment banker would be bemused by the hostility. After all, if something is "usual", then returning to it would seem to be conservative and 'fair'. From the standpoint of a banker, if they were respected and prosperous people doing business regarded as legitimate for decades prior, why should they be demonized and attacked for doing the same business today? Their detractors obviously feel that the business was never legitimate -- and the folks with pitchforks and torches only now woke up to the fact that it was never legitimate -- but I'm sure most of the bankers never thought of themselves or their careers in this way.
