Dec. 4: The San Francisco Post Office was richer by $222,573 Dec. 3 for handling the $2 billion shipment of gold from the San Francisco to the Denver mint.
The gold was moved inland for safety in the event of war.
The check came to Postmaster William H. McCarthy. The total postage bill for the shipment is $547,695.
