Economy Is Forcing Young Adults Back Home in Big Numbers, Survey Finds

    By SAM ROBERTS

For more young adults, there is no place like home for the holidays, and for the rest of the year, too. Ten percent of adults younger than 35 told the Pew Research Center that they had moved back in with their parents because of the recession.

They also blamed the economy for other lifestyle decisions. Twelve percent had gotten a roommate to share expenses. Fifteen percent said they had postponed getting married, and 14 percent said they had delayed having a baby.

In the Pew study, 13 percent of parents with grown children said one of their adult sons or daughters had moved back home in the past year. According to Pew, of all grown children who lived with their parents, 2 in 10 were full-time students, one-quarter were unemployed and about one-third said they had lived on their own before returning home.

According to the census, 56 percent of men 18 to 24 years old and 48 percent of women were either still under the same roof as their parents or had moved back home.

A smaller share of 16-to-24-year-olds — 46 percent — is currently employed than at any time since the government began collecting that data in 1948.

Meanwhile, the portion of adults 18 to 29 who lived alone declined to 7.3 percent in 2009 from 7.9 percent in 2007, according to the Current Population Survey. A decline that big was recorded only twice before over three decades, in the early 1980s and the early 1990s during or after recessions.

I am living with my mum. And soon I will be moving to live with my dad! From a downtrodden home next to a chemical plant to a trailer home in the woods. Upward mobility! Woooooooooo. :p

As I said in the past, I would rather live in a trailer I own (or with my familly) than be a slave to my debts. Keep that in mind.

Actually, looking forward to living in the trailer. It is a nice place and the surrounding area is heavily forested and hilly.

What I really want is my own 200-300 sq. ft. place.

          I second that.

But that said, you might be amused if you click on the image below

I particularly am quite fond of the inflatable church idea.

My principle residence is on an acre and a half parcel. About a year ago I was looking into buying a used manufactured home to put on it as a rental and I was amazed at what 15k would get you.

That's what I've done. I got a brand new, single wide, well constructed trailer for about 1/20'th of the cost of the nice suburban California home I had; within a few feet of the same floor space. Bye bye half million dollar mortgage.
Most folks are good; a few aren't.

I did not wanted to "blow your cover" here TPC but I had you in mind when I wrote this post this morning.

Yours is certainly a brilliant and well-timed idea. As they say: you are probably still "laughing all the way to the bank".

One day you will have to follow GRG's lead and post a picture of your mobile bunker. ;)

As for me, living less than 7km from the center of a metropolis, it is difficult to even find enough space for a trailer, but I do the next best thing: I rent.

Smart move. Now if I was in your situation I would be looking for a little place on Île d' Orléans, for the day you can escape Hogtown for good...

Well GRG, you are either a clairvoyant, a genius or both.

Oh so long ago, when I first graduated from engineering school, started working and had a steady paycheque, I saved up some bread and used my first earned holiday time to drive from Ottawa to Québec City...in October when the colours were out. Something quite spectacular for a kid from Vancouver who had never been East. I fell in love with Île d'Orléans, and have never forgotten it. Although I have been back to Montréal many times since, regrettably I have never made it back to Québec City or its environs.

Maybe I can convince EJ to arrange for the first iTulip convention in Quebec?

After all, we lost both the Nordiques and the 2002 Winter Olympics to the U.S., surely he will show some compassion. ;)

Yes much better than what is happening to these people

Long lines for area's homeless shelters

Efrain got laid off from his job as a restaurant worker eight months ago and has been looking for steady work ever since. Ken says his bipolar disorder keeps him from working, but he hasn't been able to obtain disability money. Vickie left her home to escape an abusive relationship and is fending for herself as she tries to finish her bachelor's degree online.

All three are homeless. Yet they were the lucky ones on this chilly November night. They were among 15 people who had a warm place to eat and sleep, thanks to InnVision's Hotel de Zink program, a rotating shelter operated with help from local churches.

The unlucky ones are those stuck on waiting lists, sleeping bundled in cars somewhere or huddled in alcoves or creek beds while they wait for an opening at a shelter. That wait, many agencies say, is longer this holiday season than it's been in decades.

                            Amen......and again I say Amen.

I was in Quebec City for a few days over this past labor day weekend (first trip to Canada). Flew into Boston, rented a car, crossed over in Edmunston then drove alongside Fleuve Saint-Laurent then into QC. I was taken aback, driving through the country, at the marvelous extent of the cleanliness and well manicured farms-one after another. I Attended a seminar at le chateau de frontenac which is where we lodged:

On the way to tour St. Anne's Basilica, we drove past the waterfall that you can see in the background of GRG55's pic.

                            Overall experience - WOW.

Here's what it looks like (the tan one on the left.) The one in this picture isn't mine, just one like it.
