  • Algerians attack Egyptian football fans in Sudan

    http://aljazeera.com/news/articles/3...in-Sudan-.html

Eyewitnesses say the Egyptians had been attacked with knives, swords, stones and glass bottles.

Many fans had to hide in Sudanese homes to escape the attacks. Others waved Algerian flags to pretend they are Algerians.
Algerian fans have also targeted Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak sons, Alaa and Gamal, who attended the game in Sudan, throwing bottles and stones at them and reportedly telling Mr Alaa “we will kill you”.

In a rare public statement, Mr Alaa called for a “tough stance” to be taken against Algeria, saying “when you insult my dignity... I will beat you on the head.”
This has got nothing to do with economics/finance, but... From what i see/hear on the news its hilarious Can you say, "you know you're in a third world country when......" "A soccer match has the potential to cause an international incident" ;)

Apparently the creme de la creme of Egyptian high society, entertainers (were talking the Brangelina's of Egyptian Cinema, which is like Hollywood for the ME) and government were at the game and as the crowd was leaving after Algeria beat Egypt in the qualifying match, the Algerian fans pull out swords, bats, knives, bottles and rocks and go to town on the Egyptian fans....

Among the Egyptian contingent were the Egyptian presidents two sons (who will likely succeed him in office) and a rather large contingent of Ministers as well as a boatload of other wealthy Egyptians.....

It is being reported that once the Sudanese police saw that the Algerians were well armed they ran and left the Egyptian fans to fend for themselves until the Sudanese army came in to control the crowd... Meanwhile Egyptians had to hide under cars, buses and in Sudanese citizens homes to keep from getting hurt....

How the hell do an entire lot of Algerian fans get into a stadium with knives, bats and other weapons on foreign soil???

Re: Algerians attack Egyptian football fans in Sudan

Glad I wasn't there when games took place. I was in Egypt 19 days and left Cairo on Fri November 13. People were talking about the game and very excited about, but, praise be to Allah/God, it was still in future when I left.

As an aside, I highly recommend a trip to Egypt for the sheer wonder of its history, monuments, and tombs.

Because of the very dry climate and the fact that some temples were covered with sand for hundreds of years, Egypt has the best preserved history I have ever seen. I wouldn't even calls some of them ruins - especially in the tombs in the Valley of the Kings near Luxor, where some 3200 year old paintings look as fresh as if they had been painted yesterday.

Also spent 6 days in 4 Saharan oases, where we visited a Coptic Christian cemetary, full of mausoleums that had 1500 year old paintings on the walls and a medieval Islamic town/fort that folks moved out of in 20th century, but that is still perfectly preserved.

Made it down to Abu Simbal to see the 4 huge statues of Ramses II. All you can ask yourself is, how the heck did they do that 3200 years ago without modern equipment.

All I can say is, Go, Egypt!!!

This was payback for the Egyptian fans attacking the Algerian team when they played a qualifier in Egypt last week
