    I agree. I got my painting from the artist years ago in a trade we made. We liked each other's art and traded. Now he's semi-famous and his paintings sell for a tidy sum. I'd be happy keeping it for the rest of my life, but if it could make the difference between eating and not eating, I wouldn't mind selling it. I just don't want to do something stupid that I'll regret later, and I don't understand the art market.

    Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.

      Most galleries take items on consignment at 20-25%, not half. From living artists under contract with the gallery, half is more normal.

      Approximately what is your artwork worth? The more it's worth, the less % the gallery will take.

      I have no idea if art is a good inflation hedge; my instinct is no, it's an illiquid asset class.

        So I would get a better price taking it to a gallery that doesn't represent him, then.

        About $6,000.00 according to the gallery. They offered me half.
