    I'm sorry to hear that, Mega. I know how hard it can be to fight off depression, and the broad strokes of history aren't helping much, if they ever did (maybe 20 years ago, as tyranny fell like dominos).

    Hang in there, feel better, make good choices no matter what is going on around you. And don't forget to self-medicate.

      Cures for depression in winter:

      1.) Dig-out a gold coin and place it next to you when you eat your dinner at home;

      2.) Walk along the seashore at noon;

      3.) Bicycle thru your city and check-out all of the gang-tagging and secret messages on buildings;

      4.) Make a pot of spaghetti sauce with red wine and roasted chicken (pollo asado) inside;

      5.) Speak Spanish with your banker or bank tellers in California;

      6.) Substitute teach in the California public schools;

      7.) Light-up an old florescent lamp while standing under your local 36KV power trail at night;

      8.) Watch the northern lights at night in high latitude locations;

      9.) Go to bed with a sexy chick who promises never to divorce you; keep her barefoot, God-fearing, and pregnant for life.

          All the best. Have you tried oily fish (or fish oil) ? I think it worked for me when I had a mild brush with depression, but I can't say for sure if it was correlation or causation. Either way it's a cheap placebo.

              I'll miss you, Mike. Come back...pronto.

              (Pronto is an old American television term- vaguely attributed to Indians, and most likely made up by Jewish screenwriters ;) )

                Please take good care of yourself and return in good health. Depression is a serious condition and I hope you are seeing a doctor for it.

                You will be missed.

                      Re: Mega signing off for awhile

                      Take care, Mega, and get as much light as possible during the day, walk outdoors and turn on really bright lights indoors, and then in the evening try to make the room fairly dark (no TV on, no late night iTulip reading on the computer, and as tiny a nightlight as possible). This will help regularize your hormones.
                      "In a study presented at the annual meeting of the Society for Neuroscience, researchers found that mice that were exposed to light all night long showed signs of depression."

                      Go to the tanning booth once a week for 15 minutes or so. This will really boost your vitamin D level (it will slightly increase risk of skin cancer but will reduce your risk of all kinds of other health problems enormously). Or take a supplement and have some kippers (I had some for the first time recently... so tasty). I take 5,000 iu of vitamin D because I work indoors and hardly get any sun... and it has been so cloudy for the entire last year in Japan... I guess it has been unusually cloudy in England too? I will send you a bottle of D if you like! Let me know, and take care.

                        Agreed with most of these. Mega God's Speed to you.
                        You will be in my prayer list. Unfortunately this list is growing fast now.

                        In addition, I find doing something that takes your upmost concentration, and is fun, is a good way to tune out the noise of the world that surrounds us.

                        I used to play the piano. Since I am so bad at it, it took my total concentration. I was making some nice music, and all my problems went away. Now I play guitar, much easier than piano.

                        Sports, or overhauling an car engine also come to mind.
                        Get better quick.

                        CB.

                          Spirituality (not necessarily religion) is good at helping with those type of questions. Pick your flavour or investigate some new ones, and read a few inspirational books over some cups of tea with honey in front of a warm crackling fire place.

                          Take good care Mega, hope to see you soon!

                            After my mother died I planted tons of flowers in the garden. Don't know why. I hate flowers and garden work. But after a while I got over the depression, the garden looked great, and now maintain it. Find any type of effort that will produce something and mitigate and redirect the anger and depression. Good luck. Will miss your insights while you're gone. Will look forward to them when you return. van

                              Re: Mega signing off for awhile

                              Mike, I went through it in 1990-1992. Couldn't get out of bed or if I did, wanted to crawl under a rock. Funny thing was I had no reason to be depressed - at all.
                              This is what took away the darkness.

                              See a GOOD Doctor and talk about it
                              Try the Meds until you find one that works for you (went through three brands)
                              Get a Dog (they will teach you the way out) and walk it - You can't feel sorry for yourself when your walking and forces responsibility for another living thing.
                              Cognitive Thought -http://depression.about.com/cs/psychotherapy/a/cognitive.htm - stop the spiral by fighting the illogical thought processes.
                              Go and help someone worse off than yourself. I read papers to burn victims in a local hospital.
                              Drop the internet and News - the World needs you elsewhere
                              No Alcohol or mind altering substances - Trust me on that.
                              Set yourself one daily, one weekly, one monthly and one yearly goal and achieve them. (has something to do with focus)

                              Most of all remember you are unique in the Whole World and you do have a place in it. (see how many care just in this little space -You Matter ;)
