Tired from a tough hike? Rescuers fear Yuppie 911

Yuppie 911 or legitimate life-saver? Rescue officials warn locator beacons abused by some

AP) FRESNO, Calif. (AP) - Last month two men and their teenage sons tackled one of the world's most unforgiving summertime hikes: the Grand Canyon's parched and searing Royal Arch Loop. Along with bedrolls and freeze-dried food, the inexperienced backpackers carried a personal locator beacon - just in case.

In the span of three days, the group pushed the panic button three times, mobilizing helicopters for dangerous, lifesaving rescues inside the steep canyon walls.

What was that emergency? The water they had found to quench their thirst "tasted salty."

        True.

My wife and I enjoy several TV shows now on that highlight some of these type stories. "I shouldn't be Alive " is one.

While some of the episodes are legit, some are merely about wannabe thrill seekers getting themselves into ridiculous circumstances. You can see how little respect some have for nature and the dangers involved. People in this day and age have a false sense of security that doesn't travel well when they get off the beaten track.

If they had not been toting the device that works like Onstar for hikers, "we would have never attempted this hike," one of them said after the third rescue crew forced them to board their chopper.
If it was ok in our culture for the first rescue crew to throw these two morons a beating after they landed safely, we could put a stop to this right now.

So their water tasted "funny" and they called in a helicopter at $1,000+/hour, courtesy of the taxpayers.

Hand them the bill for the services rendered, and if they don't pay up - take their little play toy, their car, their clothes and whatever else they have.

(Oh my, nooo, but that would be sooooo cruel - forcing them to receive the consequences of their own actions; why it would be simply fascist to treat them like that! Better to stick the taxpayers and everyone else who has a brain.)

So, we should bill these taxpaying individuals $1000.00 while those people in Compton and South Central take $1000 out of the System every two months?

                  Re: Yuppie 911

Similar problems arise every year as ice fishermen along Lake St Clair (Detroit Area) go out on unstable ice, it breaks up, and they start floating down into Lake Erie. Charging for rescues has reduced, but not eliminated the problem. There is really no alternative to charging people so at least some think and are deterred from stupidity.

I thought it was funny how self obsorbed these people were. It didn't occur to them that the rescue workers were there for emergencies.
