Re: Great earnings numbers from Intel and Goldman Sachs? A closer look

    WT,

    Couple of notes:

    1) From a professional IT perspective, the netbook discussion is almost irrelevant. Even though I would argue that the majority of non-technical corporate users clearly fall into the email/MS Office/internet category, sheer ego combined with corporate IT budgets would almost certainly prevent laptop replacement with netbooks.

    2) nVidia is one of two companies making graphics processors (AMD is the other via its 'acquisition' of ATI). The split between graphics processing and general processing happened long ago - a more obvious example is the Sony Playstation. Basically the inherently crappy x86 instruction processing is made more efficient via massively parallel plus predictive circuits - but these in turn lend less relative power to specialized applications like graphics. As a result there is a market (primarily with gamers and professional graphics folks) for add-on processors to add graphics power.

    3) nVidia is a sweat shop. I have a close friend who has worked in nVidia off and on for many years ever since being acquired via the failed 3dfx. He works there until he cannot stand it anymore, then quits or switches to another company. Eventually he goes back.

The good news is that nVidia is a very merit based internal system. The bad news is that even the VPs tend to be extremely hands-on and technical; this leaves little if any slack for the grunts who tend to burn out in massive quantities.

I have to agree, bought 3 netbooks and a nettop last year. Gave away three to relatives who use them mainly for email, Internet & FaceBook.

In fact the hardware switchover has some ramifications which I believe have not been fully explored by analysts, developers, or the Wintel alliance: flash memory.

With a flash memory based system, it is now theoretically possible to literally move the OS and apps with the user.
When I got my first netbook the SSD was so small that I decided to run Windows XP & Visual Studio 2008 of a SD Card. It worked but was painfully slow.
However with a few refinements USB 3.0, faster flash drives, tweaking the OS so it does not constantly write to disk I could see it catching on.;)

The combination of Intel's Atom CPU and nVidia's Ion graphic and supporting logic seems to be much closer to desktop PC levels. The benchmark data I've seen is much better than netbooks and such.

I'm likely to purchase soon one of the following to replace a laptop that a relative is using, only for a web browser, while always plugged in. Laptops that are always plugged into the mains go through a battery every year or two, which is expensive. A power supply that doesn't use batteries but must be plugged in, is more economical in that regard. And these Atom/Ion systems run at about 40 watts, rather than most any laptop at perhaps 80 watts and up.

What does Senior Cow say about a Christmas present for my wife? She wants a portable computer that runs on batteries to surf the web, email and maybe some Word applications.

Question wasnt really addressed to me But, eee pc's are pretty nice little net books and they look pretty nice...

            http://eeepc.asus.com/global/index.html

All these net books are essentially made for pretty light work.....

I was actually thinking of getting one of these and turning it into a hackintosh by adding OSX 10.6

Got one for my daughter to lug to campus. We had an issue with the battery (needed a new one after 2 months) but otherwise it is a great machine. Low price, 8-10 hours battery life, very light, runs all MS-Office apps OK etc.

              I second the recommendation.

                Sweet, thx for the suggestion.

Edit: Just bought an ASUS Eee PC Seashell 1005HA-PU17-BK 10.1-Inch Black Netbook - 10.5 Hours of Battery Life (Windows 7 Starter)

                I think she'll love it.

The eee pc benchmarks I've seen were anemic. I'd suggest doing a web search for "intel atom nvidia ion netbook" For a good discussion of this and related possibilities, see the recent AnandTech review HP Mini 311: Netbooks get ION.

A couple of months ago when asked this question by a relative, I recommended he get one of the Echo systems sold by Pudget Systems, one of the most reliable independent systems builders this last decade. He was quite happy with that. I didn't realize it, but these Echo systems are also Intel Atom + Nvidia Ion + Zotac motherboards. That's good. Pudget will cost you a little more than the big guys like HP, but you get more customization, you get to deal with customer support people who have a clue, and I prefer to work with smaller outfits when I can.

P.S. -- that Pudget Echo is not a battery laptop, so is not what you asked about. I got distracted.

Damn, I knew you would give me something good to chew on Cow. Thanks, I should have waited, but my wife will appreciate the gift anyway and that is what counts above all. I needed to get it ordered today and was at work when I posted. Happy Holidays!

The 1005HA is the same machine I got my daughter. This machine has an Atom N280 not the N270 - so it's faster. Processor speed is only part of the equation. Most people care about battery life, weight/size, screen, keyboard size etc. just as much or more.

I borrowed this machine for one day - and at the end - I was wondering why I didn't own one myself. If you're running Internet Explorer, Word, PowerPoint, Excel, Outlook ... you will be fine.

No need for buyer's remorse. Besides - ASUS has been making great motherboards for a long time ... even supplying the "big names".

Very cool fiat. I bought the 10 hour battery model for the same reason. No remorse here and I greatly appreciate the input! All the options suggested are vastly superior than a choice I would have made on my own and that is a wonderful thing. The power of an educated community is awesome.

                            Fiat's likely quite right, Jay.

I have a stronger bias than most toward high end power computers. It's a good thing that others responded first to your query.

As do I. Generally I hate laptops/netbooks. But sometimes portability trumps everything else. My go-to machine is water-cooled, has 8 cores, 12 GB of RAM, 5 * 2TB hard drives, 3 nVidia cards each with 2GB of VRAM running in SLI and a 1000W power supply. At almost 100lbs ... it & the Honda generator it would need - probably won't fit in my carry-on.

I'm on a macbook pro 2007 model Core 2 Duo w/ 4G RAM It works pretty good for what i need it for...

Damn, a water cooled system, thats got to be a nice setup...

As for Windows, i wont touch it with a 10 foot pole again... I would have put either linux or OS X on the Eee pc or the HP netbook for fun/travel usage but, like i said earlier its pretty weak for heavier users....
